coir+coffee mono tub uncased

soooo I decided to make a mono tub about a month ago, which I completely lost hope in. I thought I screwed it up a few times, but man do these things put out, even if they're a little screwy. my first mistake (I think) was making the coir and coffee too wet, second the top of my tub wasn't transparent (ended up it a lot of sideways, intertwining fruits), and third it pinned before I could case it. mind you these aren't pictures of the whole first flush, just what remains at this point, which isn't much at all compared to what was in there initially.

since the sub was so wet the humidity in there was insane, and since the fruits were sideways they soaked up water from the surface and grew really hollow and squishy. all of these things combined and I still pulled 2+ (around 70g) dry ounces from the first flush

finally there's a monster in the corner there and that's the one I plan to print. btw this was culture koh samui -> 3 quarts wbs -> ? quarts coir and coffee

4 quarts will probably take about 10 +/- a few days to colonize assuming you used liquid culture, but if you used multispore then 15 +/- a few days.
I dry them using my little fruit dehydrator. I've even made beef jerky in that thing before.

no need for a food dehydrator- if you're in culinary school then you have easy access, but if you don't...
I just use a spaceheater- takes about 4 hours on HIGH to dry 100grams of wet mushrooms.
If you don't have a heater, I think an oven will do-but do research before you go trying that-it might be too hot.

Seventy i was Just wondering when you were colonizing the substrate(IE: after u mixed jars with coir) did you seal the polyfill holes until completely colonized or did you just put polyfill in from the start. Sorry if that sounds a bit awkward, its late.

100g's = 10g dry
always works out that way.
polyfill is polyester stuffing for pillows/dolls/stuff animals stuff like that, it's used as a filter.
Nice grow man, coir/coffee grounds are easy accessible everyday items that are just as good as hpoo/cpoo.

No, I didn't seal the polyfill holes, I just made sure that the tub was out of light and tucked away in my closet until it was done colonizing. I thought I had covered all the bases, but it stilled pinned earlier than I thought it would so I couldn't case it.

The only reason why I myself would leave it uncased is to reduce the chance of certain contaminations that easily inhabit the casing mix. I've done several casings before (pastuerized and sterilized) and at least 90% of them have contaminated with either cobweb mold or trich sometime after the first or second flush. Which reminds me that the next coir and coffee grow I'm doing is uncased as well: 2 quarts C&C and 1 quart WBS culture Koh Samui. I figured I'd experiment some more with leaving coir uncased and see how good my results will be compared to the casings I've done before, which I'm obviously not so good at.
I'd rather have an uncased grow give 3-4 flushes, than a cased grow that only produces 1 flush, and the odd time 2 flushes. Again, this is just a personal thing. I just can't get casings to last that long.
I'll post that one with decent pics once the first flush is up

Did you get multiple flushes with the original uncased mono-tub? What was the yield like on those?

yeah. though potentially a high risk for contamination, casing can be very beneficial. have you tried adjusting the pH of the casing so as to prevent contaminants taking hold?
