Dead Like Me
It was the first series I was ever interested enough in to actually watch TV.
Highly recommended

Get Weeds! The first season is the shit. All of them are the shit.
If you're interested in Ricky Gervais, get Extras. It's a cringe comedy but it has enough light moments to keep you laughing. Every episode features a few HUGE stars that play in a second story line. In one of them, Daniel Radcliffe (the kid that plays Harry Potter) tries to have sex with the female lead; to impress her he pulls out an unwrapped condom from his pocket to prove he's got protection.
Don't get six feet under, it's pretentious and the writing sucks. The first season of dead like me is fantastic, especially the undead drug addict.

I don't watch much TV (we don't have one in my house), but sometimes I get to see shows with my buddies. One girl had me watch this funny show, "My Name is Earl".
It's about this guy who makes a list of all the "bad karma" things he's done and he tries to fix them after he wins the lottery. The show is pretty funny and picks on trailer trash (which is like picking on my hometown), and there is a good actor or two in the show -- the chunky guy from Shaun of the Dead is in it (Sorry, I don't know names..)

I'm assuming you've already watched the Sopranos and Six Feet Under
