is this ok to start fruiting?
    #7993522 - 02/07/08 07:48 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

ok this image is terrible quality cuz i had to take it with my phone (.3 megapixel lol) but this is a colombian strain that colonized pretty much 100% about 2-3 days ago but there is still little dots where i can see vermiculite through the mycelium that the mycelium just will not cover and ive let it stit for about 3 days now and it still hasnt taken over it so i just stuck it in the FC by itself for now but do u think this will be ok?

probably not. but we'll see. looks to be about 85% colonized and the assuming the center of your cake is colonized.

theres also a reason PF tek is done with 1/2 pint jars, not pints.

Hmm it definitely doesnt look like a 1/2 pint jar to me, but look to your left, look at my current mood setting, that could explain it

still it isnt 100% colonized, more than likely it will get contaminated. How long did you allow it to colonize for?

and also the pic makes it look worse than it is, its mostly white with just little teeny tiny specs where u can see a LITTLE bit of brown through, but i let it sit this way for 3 days and nothing changed

it has been colonizing for about 3 weeks at 84F....it had been like 2 and a half to 3 weeks somewhere around there and then it looked like that so i waited 3 more days and saw no change...my other 3 colombian strains look like that too, i have alcabenzi strain that started the day before the colombian that are full solid white on the outside but not quite fully colonized yet

Its clearly not 100% colonized. Doesnt even look close, once the outside of the cake is fully colonized, it generally needs another 3-4 days to allow the inside of the cake to colonize as well.

And the still doesnt look like a 1/2 pint to me

no, that would be a pint jar and that explains why your cake isnt fully colonized.

oh and sorry to doubt you since this is my first *hopefully* successful grow attempt but i asked the people at the store if they had "HALF PINT CANNING JARS" and they showed me theese and i figured they were about exactly half the size of a pint of beer i was sure this had to be a pint jar

you cant be serious. A 1/2 pint jars is exactly 1/2 the size of a pint jar.

ok let me rephrase this all lol...why is a half pint jar like 4-5x smaller than a pint glass that you would order of beer?

because the jars i am using are exactly half the size of my pint glass

That's a half pint jar. Its taller because its thinner. Not as short as stubby as other half pint jars. I know because I use the same kind of jars. There should be markings on the side which indicate measurements of ounces and stuff.

BTW that first pic doesn't look like its fully colonized. Me being a newb just wishes you luck and just remember to keep it well humidified and if you see anything green or weird growing toss it and don't open the rest of your jars until its thick white.

i have 3 tiny brown spots after about 18 hours of being in the FC but no funny smells at all, im wondering if it is contam or pins, im gonna let it grow a little more and see if they start to look like pin or contam....if it is contam will i have to throw out all of my perlite and put new perlite in? cuz i used all that i had and it is hard to find perlite around here right now because there is snow on the ground no stores are stocking it right now

I don't suggest incubating at such a high temp for 1/2 pint jars. Unless you are using liquid myc instead of multispore.

Otherwise the heat will dry your cakes, by the time the spores have germinated and colonized. Since you can't shake a 1/2 pint full of BRF... it CAN take a long time. Longer then QUARTS of grain!

Also, 1/2 pints ARE small, so they don't hold THAT MUCH moisture in the 1st place. They can dry quite fast, especially if there are 4 holes at the top of your jar!

Room temp is better, IMO... especially if you are colonizing just a FEW jars.

Wait 7 days after colonization, to birth. Then you are SURE you have a colonized cake.

You can't rush this hobby.

Its very very unlikely that you are seeing pins after 18 hours. Generally it takes 7-10 days to see pins after you have fruited your cakes.

That is a half pint jar.. I have some of those too. They are taller and more narrow than the normal half pint most folks use.

Here is Qt jar beside the two different 1/2 pint jars.
