I think that the most-important thing that men can do is model non-violent behavior. Here's a great link to a comparison of non-violent & violent interaction with women.
http://www.menagainstdv.org/learn/learn3.html
In addition, there are probably local activist groups in your area...I'm thinking of "Take Back the Night," which sponsors night time walks through cities in which women are not safe at night.

It seems like it. Anytime a "famous" person is accused of sexual assault, everyone seems to automatically blame the victim or discredit the victim in some way.
I started a thread about the prevalence of rape in the Pub and everyone accused me of being a bullshitter, even though the statistics were backed up by nearly a dozen studies.

You're a student, right? You could try taking a women's studies class, or at least talking to a prof in the department for more information on local events. Feminism is also not just about activism but about daily life, and being conscious about how sexism manifests in everyday interactions and normalized gender roles.
Here's a few articles that are worth checking out. They're definitly a good start, and I hope you enjoy them! Let me know what you think.
Community Support Around Intimate Violence The Ideology of Victimization Challenging gender roles A big list of interesting stuff you can pore through according to your own interests...

Yup. Another case of spousal abuse.

I'd say the number is larger. I've known a few women who have been there and they never reported it.
I've known a few men who've dealt with it as well. They really don't report it.

As NiamhNyx so aptly pointed out, the political forum is boring.
I'm interested in hearing about peoples view of feminism and male-female relations. Personally, I think this is something that does not receive enough attention. It seems like most people think we fixed all this in the previous century, but I emphatically disagree.
Not much has been "fixed" between men and women. Even if the physical part and the blatant emotional abuse went away, the cultural way of relating to each other is basically object oriented.
Just one more part of the dysfunctional behavior of the most "awake, aware and spiritual" life form on the planet.

1 in 4 women U.S. women suffer domestic violence
At least some of them lie.
Three hurricane seasons ago when Wilma took out power to most of south Florida for two weeks, the generator that was powering my house ran out of gas. The few gas stations with backup power that were open had huge lines and 4+ hour waits.
When I was finally a few cars away from the pump, a pretty woman in a shiny BMW pulled up, waved and smiled at the guy in front of me, then promptly butted in front of him when he let her in.
Many people in line behind this pair got very angry. I got out of my car and asked her to get in line like the rest of us. When she refused, I called the police and made sure she could hear me on the phone as I described her, her car, and her tag number.
She jumped out of the car and came at me in a fury screaming that if I didn't hang up, she would tell the cops that I'd hit her. When that didn't work, she yelled addressing the dispatcher on the phone with me to tell them that I had just hit her and she needed help.
I couldn't believe what was happening. It would have intimidated me into leaving lest a moron cop shows up and automatically take her side, landing me in jail. Fortunately there were many other witnesses pissed at her butting in line who would have backed me.
That experience made it clear to me that she'd played that card before, successfully.

There are definitly women who manipulate situations and play the 'victim' card because they've learned it's the best way to get what they want. But it's important not to assume that a women is lying when she reports abuse. There's a touchy line between making sure the full picture is revealed and just being a total asshole and making the situation even more traumatic. A lot of women don't press charges because they are afraid of being harangued on the stand and accused of lying. It's pretty scary to have to relive the experience by describing it to a courtroom full of strangers, and it's even worse when they are accusing you of making it all up.

but women dont seem to care as much when other women obviously make shit like that up.
I think there should be just as steep a consequence for crying wolf about physical abuse as it is for actual abuse.

While I don't condone physical abuse I am always a little confused by the choices women often make when choosing the men they want to be with. They seem surprised then when these meat heads that they value so much for their macho ways turn it on them.

The trouble is that the big, hunky, testosterone-rich studs are also the most likely to be violent. The sexual attraction factor can overwhelm common sense sometimes. (Not that men would know anything about that! )

if women were the physically stronger sex there would be much more violent domestic abuse.

Yes, if the strength was a reflection of their free testosterone level. Women who gain strength by working out do not approach the average male level of free testosterone. Testosterone increases territoriality, aggression & violence. As men age, and their testosterone levels decrease, they tend to become more mellow & laid back.

Domestic Violence in relationships happens. Even with people that would never imagine that would happen.
Both parties have something to do with it.
In a sick way, some women want to be beaten up. Otherwise they would not choose to be with men that are clearly aggressive like that. Those women have a choice too. When a guy beats on them, they do have a choice. Likewise with men who are abused.
The vast majority of un-reported cases are women beating on men. Then when that man flips his lid, those are the cases that are reported.
Women do not hit as hard as a man can, but women are not completely innocent all of the time with the final outcome either. Domestic Violence needs two people to happen.

I didn't read the article but I've said it before and I'll say it again: Any bad position somebody's in in life is their own damn fault. Maybe getting there wasn't their fault but staying there sure is. Even if it means death, there's always a way to remove yourself from an unpleasant situation.
It does suck though, that so many women need to be disciplined, lol, j/k.
