Vegetable Steamer for Sterilisation?

Can you use a vegetable steamer to sterilise jars? I don't mean a pan which goes on a hotplate and has a suspended layer above it, but rather one of those standalone ones which generates steam in the bottom and then sends it up into a plastic tower which can put your vegetables in. Has anyone ever done this successfully?
Cheers for any info you guys can offer.

You might say UTFSE, but you could do with following your own advice, since you clearly haven't checked that these posts are relevant to my question. I did look at some of the other threads about this, but they all seem to be about people using a pan with boiling water in the bottom and a suspended vegetable steamer inside it.
I am asking a different question, about this sort of steamer:

It doesn't work in the same way, since it has a cold water reservoir in the bottom, and a small steam-creating element part way up.
So, to put the question again, can this be used to sterilise PF-Tek cakes and has anyone actually done this before?

The answers I posted are still the same if your steam is produced by heated water, increasing the temp inside the chamber.

I am just concerned that it might not be getting the temperature up high enough (since these steamers are not sealed units - they have vents at the top to let steam out). I don't have a thermometer which goes up high enough to check, which is why I wanted to ask about it.

Those vents do not sound good to me. Why not just use what has been proved to be true?

Steam canners (non pressured) are not recommended for canning food, in fact boiling is what is recommended (or if the kind of preserve permits it, a pressure canner).
This is because heat penetration is really bad with steam compared to water.
As you want the heat to penetrate to the inside of the jars I would not recommend a steamer. If nothing else at all is available, then increase the sterilization time.

Can it run for two hours without shutting down? If so, use it. RR
