Some kind of Morel?
    #7992547 - 02/07/08 04:33 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

Just a pic a friend sent. I think it's some kind of morel. It was picked in La Vita Colorado probably around pine, color of print or size. Any ideas.

Landsnorkler, it is not a Verpa, look at the texture of the stipe....

Looks very much like a Phallus species, also known as Stink Horn.

yeah, I started looking at it again after pinhead and cactu said stinkhorn. So, you guys could tell because of the stipe texture, and how the stipe seems to close off at the bottom there, where it would in situ, be sitting in the egg?

That too, but mostly look at the TEXTURE of the stipe. It looks like styrofoam.

That said, the species of this mushrooms is likely either Phallus impudicus or P. hadriani. Though, to differentiate macroscopically, we would have needed to see the "egg" or volva that the mushroom erupted from.
P. impudicus has a white "egg", while P. hadriani, a purple one.

Verpa bohemica has a textured stipe as well, sort of bumpy, though it does not have the same depressions or holes in the flesh like Phallus.

styrofoam. sweet. I found a bunch of aseroe rubra when I was in kauai recently, and noticed their stipe had a strange "styrofoam" texture.
