Shuttle Launch For the Space Junkies
    #7991783 - 02/07/08 01:43 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Nothing special, just a routine shuttle launch this afternoon to take up the European Union's new Columbus science lab for attachment to the International Space Station.  The Columbus will be joined to an American module already in place and the station will be readied to join the huge Japanese "Hope" lab which will require three shuttle flights starting in March.

I  spaceship launches.  So much raw power.  I realize chemical rockets are not anything like the best way to get into orbit, but there is some terribly impressive about them to me.

Anyway...Watch.

Yep.

It's totally inefficient and there are much better ways of doing it.

But its the best we have.

Plus, it looks really really cool.

Im confused... is it the best way to do it or are there better ways?  I cant think of any other way its been done.  I know cannons to  shoot a projectile have been hypothesized, but not actually done.

Anyway, Id love to see a shuttle launch sometime in my life.  It would be awesome.  :rocket:

I'm sorry, I'm talking like a moron today.

There are conceivably better ways to it, like a space elevator or a mass driver. But we won't be getting our shit together enough to build one of these anytime soon.

 I love rocket launches! I always turn up the volume, the sound is one of the best parts!

They worked for 20 years on the Columbus module. It is a very expensive lab(1 billion without launch) with almost useless research, but that goes for the whole ISS. At least there are more than 3 astronauts up there now.

Imagine what a giant swarm of telescopes could be in space today if we didn't care about the ISS.

I wouldn't call the research almost useless by any stretch. They aren't up there growing magic crystals. A good example is xray defraction of proteins grown in microgravity used in searching for cures to disease.

Ok ok, you are right, there is some useful science in there. I think it could have been done in a cheaper way, but it's not useless. I just get a very negative feeling with everything ISS related.

We COULD have built a particle accelerator to help teach us how to make essentially unlimited, cheap, and clean fusion energy for mankind some day, but politicians and many Americans are drooling morons.

They'd rather have a flashy space station and lots of launches that you can put on TV instead of a boring-looking accelerator that doesn't move or look good on screen.

I won't argue with you there.

> We COULD have built a particle accelerator to help teach us how to make essentially unlimited, cheap, and clean fusion energy

The last thing the energy companies want is unlimited, cheap, and clean fusion energy.  They have deep pockets, politicians are corrupt, and with no profit in unlimited, cheap, and clean fusion energy, there is little incentive for non-energy companies to invest in such a risky (and expensive) endeavour.  Think how much research could be done if we tossed the money we are spending in Iraq/Middle East (to secure our oil interests) towards alternative energy research.

We should be investing money in alternative energy development.

Lots of problems there though, like energy returned on investment (more often than not it doesn't meet the 1:30 or so from oil, 1:60 coal, etc.). Usually only like 1:5, which isn't sufficient enough to provide humans with the energy they demand. Also, materials like copper and aluminum to make electrical wires are becoming very diffuse across the planet, making the investment of energy in finding them exponentially higher, not to mention in the purification such materials...

Too many problems. I go to school for energy type studies. It makes me fucking crazy.

Sorry for being a naysayer. It is one of those nights.

I know most launches look the same and I normally wouldn't post another one. But there was a night launch last night, and those are particularly impressive so I thought I would post this one...

I dont think the shuttle uses saturn rockets. It has the solid boosters, and three rockets. These rockets are different than the five used on saturn. I heard somewhere (unconfirmed) that the new rockets on the CEV will be modifications of the old saturn rockets.

I know, I'm talking about a real 1969 Saturn V here

I was out on the beach for this launch, had a view of the pad. I spent the evening with some friends having a few drinks while we waited for 2:28AM to roll around.

It was excellent, I've always been partial to night launches. The heavy cloud cover was disappointing but it was still worth the drive to see it.

Different launch. The one the OP was talking about was over a month ago.

Night launches are pretty awesome though. I wanna make it down to see a night launch before we retire the shuttle in a couple of years.
