Say Hello to my little friend
    #7991541 - 02/07/08 12:41 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

I convinced the owner of this little nursery to part with this cutting for 7$

Im going to let it callouses over for 4-5 days, then re-pot it and hope it takes off

I was debating whether or not to make 2 cuttings out of it or just repot it as 1. Your thoughts?

you might want to let it callous longer than that unless you use a fan on it

How long do you think it would take to callous over?

Just took some measurements. 10 inches tall and 9 inches around.

Yep, when you wrap a tape measure around, the circumference is 9 1/2 inches.

The diameter is probably 3 inches, but I did the circumference; just took a tape measure and wrapped it around the entire thing.

Divide 9 1/2 by pi (3.14) and the diameter is just over 3 inches

Anyone have any advice for me once I re-pot her?

This will be my first cactus ive ever grown so any kind of tips are appreciated.

Im guessing she will have more pups whenever she is ready, or is there some kind of time frame or time of year that they tend to have more pups.

She might base pup when she gets older.

If you top it, she will pup.

Don't water it for about a month after you pot it, wait until it has roots.

Just cut the top off.

Top it= cut the top off.

I'm not saying to do it...

But it will pup if you do.

Can you go a little further please. I definitely do want her to pup, but what are the pros and cons of doing this.

Im guessing Id want to put some sort of "band-aid" on the top as well to prevent any kind of infection from getting to her.

Why does cutting off the top cause a cactus to have pups?

band aid?

I wouldn't doubt if this guy thought pups were little puppy dogs that sprouted from the cactus.

Who me?

And by band-aid I meant some sort of cotton clothe tapped to cover the exposed wound.

No, you want any cut areas to stay exposed so air can get to them and they can callous and heal.

I would not cut it. Let it grow and become established. If you cut the top off, not only will the new top cutting need to callous first and then will grow slower due to less energy resources available, but then the bottom half will also have less resources and the offshoots it grows will likely be skinny. Let it grow and become established before even thinking of cutting it. IME, Pedros usually grow basal pups around when they get to be 3 ft. tall, although there is variance of course.

wait for it to grow a year or two before topping.
then the top you cut off can be rooted and you will get some middle section also to either root or for incense
dont bother getting little pups off it now.
also after callousing and putting into bone dry soil pull it up every week to check for rot and mold.
once root buds appear you can start watering lightly.

That sounds pretty consistent with what I have been reading as well. Ill just plant this cutting once it callous and let her go for awhile. Hopefully with me planting her outside in early March that will provide for an optimal time for peak growth. Its already getting up to 70 here.

Thank you for your advice I think thats the best option to keep her healthy and ill just be patient and wait for some natural pups instead of trying to induce it myself.

I might even pick up another 1-2 cuttings if I can find some healthy ones.

looks like your cutting was a pup. if you get bigger middle sections of cactus they will grow pups just like your cutting.
I have a few of them....

these are over 10 lbs each without soil. they will grow faster than smaller cuttings. you can probably get some good deals if you know where to look

yeah this was a pup she was growing on the base of her mother, I specifically asked if the owner was willing to cut the pup off for me and thankfully she agreed. It was the only healthy Pedro they had. I plan on going out sometime next week and looking at a couple other nurseries and seeing if I cant find myself any other bargains.

the mother was about 7 feet tall but in terrible health, was very yellow and elongated.

did you just take cuttings off yours? is that the open sores that are visible and the pups grew off the main stalk? they look very healthy and the base is very thick. beautiful

As long as there is no danger of frost it can be outside now.

Trichocereus (San Pedro) are mountain cacti.

Nice Pedro, I see your from Tucson also. I was lazy and ordered seeds instead of looking locally, can't wait to see how fast T. Pachanoi seedlings grow. Good luck!

I ordered some peruvians and some pedro seeds as well but neither ones germinated at all. I definitely didnt germinate them the best way and my weather conditions were a little cold for them. I hope you have better luck.

Sad thing was, the seeds were 2$ more than that beautiful cutting.

cactus seeds are very easy to germ if you follow the info posted all over the place on this site :-)

unless they are super old and even then some will still pop up
