TWO BUXTON men caught growing cannabis plants in their home have been given a suspended prison sentence. Police found 37 cannabis plants and a sophisticated cultivation set-up at the Windsor Road home of Michael Christopher Taylor and Peter Geoffrey Ribeiro.
Derby Crown Court heard on Friday how the pair had hoped to use the crop to produce enough cannabis to feed their habit for six months.
Judge Abbas Mithani said: "Although this was not a large operation, nevertheless it was a significant one involving sophisticated hydroponic machinery.
"I am told the prosecution do not challenge that the cannabis was for personal use and not for commercial supply, and it is right for me to sentence you on that basis."
The court heard how police had executed a drugs warrant on October 16 last year and discovered the cultivation system in an upstairs bedroom of the property.
Jeremy Robson, prosecuting, said officers discovered the 37 cannabis plants growing in pots, which were connected to a hose watering and feeding system.
The room was also fitted with seven large sodium lights and an air extraction system to channel fumes up the chimney. The windows were black out.
Taylor, 39, and Ribeiro, 34, each pleaded guilty to producing the cannabis plants when they appeared at an earlier hearing before High Peak Magistrates' Court.
On that occasion, Ribeiro also pleaded guilty to possession of 1.2 grammes of MDMA, or ectsasy, a paper square of LSD, 0.33 grammes of ketamine, 12 temazepam tablets and 146.01 grammes of cannabis, while Taylor admitted possessing 6.08 grammes of cannabis and 12 temazepam tablets.
Cheryl Mottram, defending, said: "Both defendants entered early guilty pleas and gave full and frank admissions to police.
"Neither decided to blame each other or to disassociate themselves from the offences.
"Both accepted it was a sophisticated enterprise they had set up, but that it was for their own personal use. They had hoped to get six months supply from the crop they were growing."
Taylor, who works at the Spa Bar and Milton Head Hotel, and Ribeiro, a full-time student at the University of Derby, were each sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for 18 months.
They must also complete 250 hours of unpaid work in the community, undergo a period of supervision and pay £130 court costs.

Yeah. In the US those guys would be getting sodomized by rapists and murderers in jail for about 10 years.
