I mean, thats what you're supposed to do Its just a lot faster to colonize if you break up the cake or grain. The manure will colonize much faster with multiple innoculation spots.

Sounds like you inadvertently used your BRF cake as spawn for dung.

Ha, hA! great idea. You know how straw is baled in flakes? around 10 or 15 i think per bail? just make 10 dung trays, and pun them between the flakes of a soaked bail, and re tie the bale. Industrial size shroom cake.

My bail with the nutrient juice is almost completely colonized. It started close to the center and it is poking out 75% of the surface. No dung though. Just the secret nutrient juice. I started another bail as you describe this morning. I can see it already next spring. My yard is going to be end to end with hay bales. Why the fuck not daily transfers are not that hard and it is a good time consuming task. Can you imagine the rewards coming. RE: 10 or 15 . . no . .its cost like 5 bucks for a bail of hay . .and a huge one!! ,. Bails of hay are abandoned everywhere and they usually have begun to break down and provide good substrate. Just look around new areas where there is construction.

I think he means 10-15 flakes of hay/straw per bale, not the cost...I just picked up a bale of straw for $4 here....

No I think he meant price, he said 10 or 15 .... No 5 Meaning his bail of hay cost him only $5
And the class said, "Thank You Teacher"

I just wanted to clear up what i said. It wasn't well explained. SoFarnorth was correct. When hay is baled, the machine bails it in flakes. a bale consists of about 10 or 15 flakes, or sections. These are vertical slices if you will. Then bound together with twine. Coming from a farm i am a bit of a hay bale expert. lol. I would feed the horses 2-3 flakes twice a day, depending on the horse and such. Anyhoo, i was suggesting soaking, cutting the bale twine, inoculating between the flakes, and re-tieing. You may want to divide it in half and re-tie them so you have 2 half bails. Sometimes bales will break sideways, which is a mess and a general pain in the ass.

I know what you mean by 'expert' - last weekend, we moved 3 tons of hay into the barn for the horses this winter....or, at least through January....

I was hoping someone would know what a hay flake was. Can't teach these suburbanite kids nothin. I had to clear an old barn of dusty 10+ yr old hay. Dusty shit. Some wild mushrooms grew in the barnyard where it's rotting down now.

I hear ya's...
By the way, if you get a chance to do the 'soak the bale down' tek, please post the results. I was going to do it, but ran out of colonized substrate, and don't know if I'll get a chance to get around to it anymore this summer...

if i do it i'll post. I'm wondering what would be best to innoculate the bale with. Rye would be to easily contaminates, and attracts pests. I'm thinking i will innoculate about 5 flakes with with rye, then place these between others.
