WBS/blackcow trays....Update

well i started out with cakes, and frankly cakes suck(compared to other options).....i had one contam so i broke them up and cased them befor it went all bad:)
anyway....i started some wbs jars innoced with LC which finished up in 10 days on the dot and then i spawned them to 50/50 black cow an verm....i microwaved the substrate for 12 mins let cool an spawned. here are the trays just a day after i spawned them

ill be casing them with 50/50 MGMC and verm....hopefully i can manage a good pinset, my casing always seem to heavy an compact when i want light an fluffy.....any suggestions on how to manage that....should i just lightly sprinkle it on??My other casings seemed so heavy the myc couldnt get through it in a reasonable time(woulda taken at least two weeks if not more)...
An now im onto my second wbs project...more jars await the PC:)

well my two blackcow/wbs trays are fully colonized with some seriouly afro like myc and im goin to case them tonight. Ive got some updates pics and Q's for you guys....
theres one of the colonized trays...nice an white
heres where i have a question.....my tinfoil has been dripping onto the surface of the sub and it turned a yellow color(look close theres a yellow puddle in the middle of the pic...sorry cell phone)...it happened once before and i just absorbed the fluid with some paper towel and that was that, nothing else happened so i figured it was just "myc piss" as some call it mixed with some condensation......happened again in the same fashion different place.....im not really worried because the other spot looks healthy again id just like some input so i can put a name on it....
and theres my grow tub....gunna be like a monotub except using perlite with casings on top....gunna put 4 holes each side just above the perlite layer...tryin out somethin new:)
thanks, -D

nope cow manure is considered better in terms of what a mushroom needs to grow, but its the texture of hpoo that is so attractive to most growers....maybe ive been reading too much:)

add corse verm to the mgmc and lightly sprinkle it on. I never put more than 3/4 of an inch on for casing.

i cant seem to find corse verm at Hdepot or lowes....is it more the pet store variety?
yea i figured i should sprinkle...lol last time i lightly spackled it on for a nice sealed casing making sure that even the most determined myc couldnt penetrate i dunno what i was thinking....i scraped that one an its in the FC for some reason...guess i just dont have the heart to bag it without giving it the chance to fruit..

Black kow is what I use. when I first started using it I had the same problem with it compacting so now I use approx. 3.5L black kow-3.5L straw-3.5L 90/10 coir/coffee-1L fine grade verm(all that the local Lowe's carries) for each of my mono tubs. The extra ingredients really loosen/fluff up the substrate which makes it real easy for the mycelium to grow through. Also, when I layer it out in the tub I always do it by the hand full so I can break it up with my fingers and scatter it out lightly to keep it as loose as possible.

This is great. I'm looking into the same product. Black kow, that is. Can't wait for updates.

UPDATE:
well my casing trays have been in the fruiting chanber for a couple days now and you can see that im getting pretty even colonization...

also here is a picture of my monotubed fruiting chamber....its basically a monotub with casing trays placed on a layer of perlite...though it might not work as well as a monotub because the sides of the trays will stop the removal of the co2 buildup directly atop the trays, i will still be fanning a few times a day which will illiminate the prob:)
to be continued.....cant wait to wake up to some pinning

cut the sides of the trays that are blocking Co2 flow off or drill a bunch of holes in them.

yea i thought bout that but i figure ill fan for now an fix that next grow:)
i have a question about pinset though ive seen both allowing the casing layer to completely colonize, and allowing the myc to peak through then patch ive never really come to a conclusion about which is better.....as long as you are getting even colonization does the time at which you put the casing into fruiting condition really matter? If im getting even colonization all over but the whole surface isnt covered will it effect the amount of pins or will the entire surface still produce pins?
thanks -D

What's the point of a casing if it's fully colonized? As soon as it comes through the casing..patch it and throw it into fruiting conditions or throw it in fruiting conditions when you case it, either way. You get better pin sets and less contaminants with FFAE a.k.a Frequent Fresh Air Exchange.

Thanks dumbfounded, thats why i was kinda confused on which way to go and just stuck it in the fc after it poked through and i patched....it seems that letting the casing fully colonize contradicts the whole idea behind the casing somewhat.....but what do i no:) got it setup like a mono and im fannin 2-3 times a day FFAE it is

Update...2/16
well i woke up yesturday morning to pins and this is them today

sorry for the bad pic its with a phone i dont have a digi....my other tray is just starting to pin because i think the casing layer was alittle thicker so its about a day or so behind.
i got a pretty damn good pin set using 50/50 verm/MGMC, if you cant see the whole surface is covered with pins from 1/4inch to 3/4inch tall....
