lots of deformed pins on cakes
    #7988324 - 02/06/08 07:07 PM (16 years, 13 days ago)

I have eight multispore BRF cakes in my fc, one is of a "thai" cube strain and the rest are "hawaiian" which i originally got from PF. I've grown the "hawaiian" many times before on cakes and compost always with decent results. I dunked and rolled them in large size vermiculite two weeks ago. So far they all are covered with loads of pins, although only the "thai" is developing its first mushrooms. The pins which are growing on the rest of the cakes are turning into small capless deformed round growths. I've seen this before on cakes, but not in a while!

Are there environmental factors which cause these deformities, genetic issues with "old" strains or prints? The same "hawaiian" cubes grew normal mushrooms from a uncased grain cake two weeks ago.

Fruiting chamber conditions are:
-temps around 68-70 during day and 62 at night
-light from a small flourescent on twelve hours a day
-fresh air by fanning 2-3 times a day, tub has holes on top/bottom
-cakes are sitting on about 1 inch moist verm.

I know conditions are not ideal but i believe they are sufficient for fruiting. Mainly the low temps are stalling things i think, but the cause of the deformities is what i'm wondering about.
