white dots on grains
    #7987128 - 02/06/08 02:58 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

i noticed these being very prevelant on one of my 6 jars that is not colonizing very fast at all. i though i remember rr saying that its bacteria. if so should i toss the jar.

my other 5 jars i did notice a couple white dots on a kernal here or there but they are colonizing great. should they be tossed also if bacteria is the case.

ususally it will turn green if its bad. sometimes mycelium does that but if its not u will see green in a couple of days.... white dots first then green but give it a few days and see if there is a color change

usually trich will make a cluster together.... it looks ok right now... if its going to turn green it will happen soon... also would avoid putting my nose up to conatminates i would keep a distance but you can still smell

im thinking its bacteria contamination causing it to slowly colonize. here's a couple pics of the ones that are colonizing great with only a couple little white specs on a couple grains that i noticed

Every time I've seen white dots like that, they spread and turn green in a few days.

yeah you can try ....never been successful with that ..i mean opening the jar and smelling after you know its contaminated.... i try to stear people away from putting there noses in obviously contaminated jars cause mold spores can be dangerous.... you might seperate it from ur other jars... but i would not toss yet

MY last grow got lots of white dots in them..

The jars then started to form tunnels.

After spawning I realized that the white spots were gnat eggs. The eggs had to be in the syringe because the jars were PCed for 90 mins.

so did you keep the ones and use them that turned out fine?

i just want to know about the 4 jars that are colonizing great but like i said have just a couple white specs on just 1-2 grains.

how does 1 even get yeast in their jars anyways?

jars never fully colonized where the grain was covered with white dots
the white dots never grew to anything but... white dots.
the mycelium just grew strong in the areas it was already growing strong in
i opened the jar for a smell but... no smell, just the usual mushroomy smell
cleaned the jars out with a fork for an inspection and to get a closer look but
after dumping out all the grain it looked like normal spawn.
to be on the safe side i didnt spawn any of it...

i donno bro, hard to tell.

so i tossed the one bad one.

what would happen if i spawn these other jars, (the ones with just a couple specs of yeast) to coir?

what sort of damage does yeast do to ones grow? yeast and mycelium are both fungus right?

Toss out contaminated spawn. I must not have made that clear above.

i understand that but i still had questions that i wanted some answers to.

-its not brought up much so how does one contract yeast in their spawn jars? so this wont happen again.

i.e.- did i not simmer them long enough?

were they to wet when i inoculated them?

- will having yeast eventually turn into tritch? why is it so bad if it and mushrooms are both fungus (as stated above)

just trying to learn a little more on the yeast subject so i could pass on the info to future growers instead of just saying toss it.

i had this same problem a couple months ago. I believe its from a contaminated print. I think thats what i read but dont quote me on it someone with more expierence will have to answer that.

But like you said not simmering long enough might of done it to. Best of luck.
