from the OP's article:
Quote:

"Every little piece of plastic manufactured in the past 50 years that made it into the ocean is still out there somewhere," said Tony Andrady, a chemist with the US-based Research Triangle Institute.

and it will be out there for a very very long time unless we do something about it
plastic degrades horribly slow

the book I mentioned previously also had a section how that the number of pastic particles floating in the water/in sand has increased 10 fold in PPM
dont know the number sadly

which means that it passes through almost all marine life

the toxicity and long term effects of it arnt known yet
cant be good

Marine life should make better use of plastics. Evolve or darwin will fuck them hard.

that's pretty gross and disgusting. humans should just start dumping all their garbage in antartica. it's pretty useless anyway. we need giant sea worthy garbage barges for that to be realistic though.

I know this isn't going to sound like the most nature-friendly solution, but my American roots tell me we should net that shit up and then weight the nets down to the sea floor. Sure, we'll lose some sea life in the nets, but it's one of those "kill some, save millions" situations...

I don't think so. Not unless we move to another planet and turn this one into a nature preserve.

I remember when I was younger how I used to piss all over anything environmentalists said. I took that sort of attitude that we wouldn't see long-term effects in our lifetime.

I was so wrong.

I'm not gonna go scream green peace or anything, but Christ, are we so pathetic as a race?

And what kills me most is the ready willingness to turn a blind eye to it. That's painful. Sweep it under the bed. That makes it clean.

Man... we've got the mentality of a five year old told to clean his room.

Fucking shameful.

O my god humans are just way to stupid to survive with apposable thumbs.

I dont know if anyone saw the movie idiocracy, but alot of rings true which is why its one of my favorites.
