Shaq traded to the Suns!?

Wow. So Shaq's been traded to the Suns for Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks.
What do you guys think? I'm not really seeing how this is such a great move for the Suns...removing a key ingredient to your 'run n' gun' offense, and replacing it with an aging, injured, somewhat immobile Shaquille O'neal.
Opinions? Thoughts?

I'm a Suns fan and I think it's the worst fucking idea I have ever heard. Shaq is worthless, a big fucking ooaf that doesn't fit with the Suns style of play. Not to mention he is nearly 40 and injured. The guys is a horrible basketball player, only in the NBA because he's 9 ft - 400 lbs.

It could be a good fit to mentor Stoudemire (not that he needs much, he's a beast) but he's old and hurt; getting rid of Marion is duuuuumb.

Apparently Marion was unhappy in Phoenix and thus was causing some tension in the locker room...but still, the more I think about this trade the more idiotic it seems. Shaq's a big fat joke, a 'has been'. This is a great example as to how fucking naive GM's can be some times. I'm sure Nash realized this wasn't a great idea, and I bet their coach Mike D'Antoni wasn't too keen on it either.

I think it was a great move for the Suns. Shaq can come off the bench and get a ton of playing time when they play the Spur's low tempo game. Plus, can you imagine anyone driving and getting to the basket with two 7-footers in the paint?
Plus, Marion was unhappy and Phoenix has a million wing-men anyways. The Suns don't need MArion. Mark my words.

Oh I know. I'm a Sonics fan (yes it's a painful existence) and we ended our 14 game losing streak by beating the Spurs!
but as much as I hate the spurs, you just know they'll get hot again between now and the playoffs.

Seriously, have the Suns given any indication of how they expect this to work?
They run. Its what they do. They are are like gazelles on the plains of the NBA, surviving on speed. And they have just traded one of their head gazelles for the oldest Elephant on the continent?
What possible purpose could he serve them? They will be down the floor and have scored twice by the time Shaq gets into position.
This is the dumbest trade in recent memory, unless The Matrix was just so unhappy that a trade was necessary to prevent Steve Nash from beating him to death with a hockey stick.
On the other hand, Marion is really a very good player and I think if you put him and D-Wade on the same team and get them some help next year...
That is the beginning of a very good team, especially in the East.

Maybe they don't need to run. Running hasn't got them anything in the playoffs in the past. They have good players that can fill spots in any gameplan.

The Suns are built as a regular season team. This move makes them a post-season team because they need to also have a half-court game in addition to their transition game. Shaq gives them that.
Shaq maybe can't run like he used to but he can be the one to trigger the fast break by rebounding and dishing. He ain't what he used to be but what he is is still pretty damn good. And he's highly motivated to prove he can still play. He is also a team player.
There is risk involved but I think it's worth to risk to go for the title now. Nash is 34 himself and what they had wasn't getting it done in the playoffs.

they had it all, if it werent for greedy fucks paying off referees to throw the game the suns would have won last year... the spurs do not deserve last years championship and should have it erased from history...
anyway im not to sure about shaq, he probably doesnt have that much longer in the NBA which makes it a stupid trade right there, but the suns need to go for the gold now so in that sense he may be able to do some damage come playoffs

For Shawn Marion!?
Shawn Marion NOW is better than Shaq is, and he is only going to get better.
Shawn Marion is a for-sure All-Star.

Shawn Marion is better than Shaq at this stage of his career, no doubt about that. But one thing Shaq can give you that the Matrix can't is that unstoppable force in the post due to his tremendous size and strength.
The idea behind the trade is that at times in playoff games teams with good defenses will take away the Sun's normal transition game they run in the regular season. At that point you have to play half-court basketball and the Suns as formerly constructed were not especially good at that. Shaq, when healthy, will give them that. The big question though is will he stay healthy enough to make that difference? Personally, I think it's worth the gamble but time will tell. We will get a sneak preview of that tonight when the Suns play the Lakers on ESPN at 9m eastern time. I don't imagine Shaq will play many minutes tonight though.

For what it's worth, keep in mind that losing Marion doesn't only translate as losing a piece of their offensive running game. There's all this talk about gaining a defensive presence in acquiring Shaq, but Marion WAS a defensive presence! He ain't no 300 pound monster like Shaq is, but Marion's usually among the top ten or so players in rebounding and is a perennial leader in steals. His game was a diversely unique one that won't easily be replaced.
I don't see why Stoudemire (who's a beast himself) can't be more of a defensive presence down low...but that's probably a whole nother story in and of itself.

Marion is a great player. I can't believe they would give him up for Shaq.
I'll eat crow if they win a championship, but for *Shaq*? He's like, 80!

He's just coming off an injury and hasn't played in over a month.
Give him some time. Sheesh.
Marion is a great player but I think the idea is that with the Sun's depth other players will be able to contribute and help take up the slack. There are some very good players on that team who will get more minutes now.
Amare Stoudamire is going to absolutely GO OFF with Shaq drawing opposing defense's attention he will be freed up. Last night he had 37 pts, 15 rbs and 2 blocked shots.
I understand people's concerns but I think if he can stay healthy the move will prove to be a good one. It's going to be fun finding out..

I still don't see it working out. But Shaq was obviously sandbagging it big time down in Florida, so it doesn't look nearly as bad as it did at first glance.
For the record, I don't blame him for wanting to bail. People get pissed when athletes do such things, but to me it's understandable.

Heh. I was in the minority but had a feeling it would work out. The Sun's 96-79 blowout of the Spurs IN San Antonio last night should silence most remaining doubters.
Of course the true test will be if the Suns can advance further in the playoffs this year.
Other trades have worked out great also: KG in Boston, Pau Gasol in LA. The Jason Kidd trade really seems to have hurt the Mavs though.

I'm just saying that if Shaq never lost weight, healed, stopped sandbagging, ect. this never would have worked out.
Looks like the big man saved it all up for a title run. Boston vs either LA or Phoenix would be great!

Yeah, Shaq has always been that way to an extent though. He usually saves his "A" game for late in the season and the playoffs. Even more so now that he is late in his career.
So what has become of Shawn Marion who was traded away for Shaq?
Foot injury ends Shawn Marion's season
MIAMI, April 4 (UPI) -- A foot injury has ended the 2007-08 NBA season of Miami Heat forward Shawn Marion.
The Florida South Sentinel reported that the 6-foot-7, 230-pound Marion was diagnosed with plantar fasciitis in his left foot and heel.
The injury, which affects ligaments, causes weakness and swelling.
http://www.upi.com/NewsTrack/Sports/2008/04/04/foot_injury_ends_shawn_marions_season/9255/
Marion was already bothered by back spasms that forced him to miss 11 of the past 12 games.

it's hard to say.
like i stated before, it's not as if Marion couldn't play defense. He's averaged around 8 or 9 boards per game throughout his career, and has ranked amongst the top ten in steals per game before. Maybe the Spurs would still be up 3-0 anyways, but I still say this was a bogus trade. Marion simply gives you more firepower (as well as legit defense) than Shaq ever could at this point in his rapidly declining career.
oh btw, FUCK THE SPURS.
