I just don't want to set my house on fire, that's key, but I'd like to be able to at least prep a sane amount of substrate without having to refill the thing 5 times.
I do my pc'ing in the garage, in the middle of the floor. Have been using the same hotplate for years, plugged into a 25 foot extension cord with no issues.

I do my PC'ing in my kitchen, right next to a 50 gallon liquor still and 10 gallons of jet fuel.
Seriously though, PC'ing is fine in house, just remember that "Set it and forget it" is exactly the opposite of what you want to do with a PC.

I picked up a "Health Model 22" PC at a garage sale for $15. Bought a new gasket at Ace Hardware for $1. Thing holds 8 pints easy. Drool over that.
