I've suddenly become very interested in finding out who my ancestors were.  How many of you have done this?  What services did you use?  Can it be done without paying a genealogy company?  I haven't done any research yet, I just wanted to see if anyone could point my in a useful direction.

Please, share your experiences.

Do you have any grandparents still alive? or parents?

They can be great resources. My grandma remembers three generations above her in good detail. Often times, old people keep good records too. If you could get back just a couple of generations, you might be able to research with libraries, and what not.

I was gonna say the same my grandma had a picture of one of my relatives that fought in the civil war hanging on the wall and was able to tell me stories about him even though she obviously never knew him, story was he died in his wife's arms when he got off the train returning from the war from an injury. Grandparents are usually very good with that stuff. They even had eye glasses from the 20's, tobacco container with tobacco still in it from the same period plus pennies 100 years old, I still have some Indian head pennies.

Both parents and both grandmothers are alive. I will interview them all.

I want to fill in the blanks in my family tree, then try and find as much out about them as possible.

My Grandma hired a Genealogist (A guy who is basically obesessed with who fucked who, right?) It costed like upwards of 800 bucks; I don't know where she went or anything, or what company it was, so I'm useless in that department.

We found out: There are Four knighted people in my lineage, and one of which is Sir Francis Drake! Makes since I'm into exploration. And fucking with anything Spanish Armada.

My ancestors were scattered all over the globe.
Most of them have passed on by now.
