Liberating data from usenet - the easy way

It seems there is a lot of confusion when it comes to leeching files from usenet. Hopefully this post will help anyone that is sick of torrents/p2p junk or paranoid, or has had trouble using usenet in the past.
The best application I've found to leech usenet is sabnzbdplus (mac version) w/ nzbdstatus Firefox addon & newzbin for nzb files. The program runs a small webserver on you on your machine to host the application.
Works on various platforms (python), is open source, well documented, and is fully automated. It pulls the nzb file from newzbin, downloads, par2, unrar, delete tmp files, etc all by itself. It can be confusing to get it all setup, but here are some links to get you going:
Feel free to post questions.

How do I get everything working together? Got SABnzbdPlus and the Firefox extension installed, now how do I get the NZB file off of Newzbin?

thanks for the great post beatyou. But I do have some questions...
Evidently I get free usenet access through my ISP, time warner, which I'm pretty sure I have setup correctly. My question is once everything is setup, how do I start downloading a file? Do I need a newzbin membership? If so, got any invites to spare?
When I click the little nzb icon in the search listings I get the following error
Error: Select some Reports to perform the operation on!
I really want to try this, I got caught using torrents, so I'm too paranoid to try them now, and I think this is my answer, but have never been able to figure it out...
Thanks for the help man

Heh, same here. I like being able to download but I got a cease and desist a few months ago so here I am. Anyone have a tutorial on using news groups? I have roadrunner for whatever its worth.

Only members can pull nzbs off the site. Newzbin is currently invite only, meaning a current member has to invite you. This was not the case a couple of months ago. I have 5 invites I'm willing to negotiate. Binsearch or Newzleech might also have NZBs?

Sometimes. You might be able to use news servers provided by your ISP. Check with your ISP to find out. You will usually get much better service (long retention, faster speeds, completeness, etc) with a paid news provider. There are lots of shady usenet providers, some legit ones are Giganews - NewsHosting also.
Free news servers here might be worth a shot too.

Did you install the nzbdstatu firefox extension?. That extension will only work with newzbin.
Also, do you have a Newzbin account? I dont think you can grab nzbs if you dont.

There are plenty of opensource news readers (nntp clients) available for free. As far as quality, you would have to judge that for yourself.

Author of nzbdStatus here. The extension will automatically upload any nzb file downloaded without regard to where it came from. So it will work with any site that provides nzb files for download like the free binsearch.info . It just happens to work easier on Newzbin since they have a nicer site. Glad you like the extension!
