Cake not pinning after a month?
    #7983598 - 02/05/08 05:44 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

Ok, i got a cake that was in a jar for probably much too long, like a month or more fully colonized and forgotten.

it's very white and healthy looking.

well, i took it out, and since i have nothing in my house suitable for fruiting a single cake, (poor college student) i just cut a gallon milk container in half, filled the bottom with perlite, and stuck the cake in that, and put the whole thing in a zip-lock bag that i would open and fan out everyday, usually more than once, several weeks after still no pins, i started to leave the bag partially open 24/7.

oh, and the cake is covered with white mycelium fuzz. nothing unhealthy in appearance... and in fact i looked today and there may be some tiny tiny little pins forming, buts its hard to tell right now.

So there must be something dumb I'm doing wrong... I've never used perlite before and i very rarely fruit cakes. whsy it taking so long, what am i missing?

it's been sitting for about a month or more in my hurtin' excuse for a fruiting chamber.

oh well, I'm about to spawn my recently finished jars to coir, then do some casings. =P

aight, so dunk and roll.. ?

i was thinking, could it be that the cake has dried out some by sitting around for so long inside the 1/2 pint jar? it doesnt look unusually dry....

i'm gonan give it one more go with a dunk.. see what happens, make a better chamber if i can find anything.. any ghetto chamber suggestions?

i just want to have a few grams to munch on while i wait for the main course =P

i got 19 pf jars just about finished colonizing... to spawn to coir, then case and fruit in monotubs.

It could be one of three things...

contamination on the inside (highly unlikely)

lack of nutrients (did you follow the pf tek step for step?)

but more then likely it's a lack of moisture since those PMP methods re lie heavily on the moisture from the cake to humidify the entire pod. Defiantly give it a 16-18 hour dunk and roll it in damp vermiculite. If it has begun pinning however, I wouldn't risk it.

Try again is the worst case scenario.

you need WATER. nothing else.
dunk for 24 hours in the fridge, roll in verm, stick it in a poor mans terrarium (2L pop bottle, perlite on the bottom, mist right after FAE regularly).

aight, thanks guys...
i'm dunking the cake now.

..and yes, i followed the pf tek correctly, the other jars from the same batch had no problems, but they were mostly cased (a few were fruited from cake with no problems)

this cake however, was somehow forgotten and sat in a dark closet for a month or more easily before i found it and decided to fruit. it looks very healthy and very white. i sort of blame my hokey fruiting chamber, im sure even a pop bottle would be a better chamber than what i got going on right now.

This may be a dumb question, but you didn't specify... Did you get the perlite damp? It doesn't do anything unless you add water to it.

One would think so, but perlite is actually not absorbent. It wouldn't suck any moisture out of the air, if that's what you were thinking. It just has an incredible surface area for its size, so there are lots of nooks and crannies for water to get into and evaporate from.
