wood chips and sawdust.... Qs?

okay, i'm setting up my wood sub blocks for my shiitakes. I got alder wood chips for smoking to be used, which is rather fine with a decent amount of sawdust mixed in. i separated the dust from the pieces, and i plan on soaking the pieces over night before mixing up with sawdust and wheat bran and ....gypsum? i'm currently out of gypsum at the moment, and there isn't a hardware store near enough to me that carries it that i can get it by the time i will need it. I have dolomite lime however... could this be used alternatively in a lower ratio?

No. Never get dolomite lime anywhere near your mushrooms. Go get a scrap of drywall at the hardware store or construction site, and smash it up to use for the gypsum. Don't overdo the wheat bran. Consider ten percent wheat bran by volume to be the maximum with shiitake or you'll end up with a lot of mutants and aborts. RR

hahaha, i know, i realized that was a foolish question as soon as a posted it.....i was on my way far away as i realized though... and why keep dolomite lime away from them completley? i used that shit to pasteurize my straw for my oyster mushrooms last time and it rocked socks...
is the gypsum really necessary? i can't find any chunks of spare sheet rock sitting around... i might just boil the chips, then just pick up a bag of gypsum on the way to where i'll be autoclaving (i've got access to a big one on campus at my school so i can do a lot more than what would fit in a PC....) and just mix up the sawdust, bran and gypsum mixture on spot, then pitch it in the bags at the place before i clave....
