no return address or a fake address are for sure red flags...
just look in the phone book and pick something that will at least check out.

No return address is super sketchy.
Fake return address is fine, even if it doesn't exist. It just has to look semi-legit, as if it does.
You can use a real one in your area as well.

You really think they run every return address through a national database?

they get weirded out if you don't use a return address???
I fail to see why that would be such a big deal

Because it gives people reason to believe that whatever is in the letter or parcel was sent by someone who didn't want it traced back to them in anyway. Or least that's what I would think if I were the post man. It seems fishy.
If there is at least a fake name, address, city, zip code, etc. up in the left upper corner I wouldn't even look at it twice. There's no knowing if its legit or not. Its just that there actually is something there instead or nothing, which is sketchy IMO.

Hope for the best, but expect the worst.
As a rule of thumb. But 95% percent of the time sure they probably won't care.

What about people that write the return address on the back of the envelope? Are postal workers concerned about those until they flip them over? Are they flagged by the OCR machines and diverted for return address checks?

whiskeyclone: no, i don't think they check every package. But, if they pick yours for some other reason.. random or whatever.. why not have all your bases covered?
not like it's hard to find an address that exists that is not your own.

Return adresses don't mean shit, unless you forget your stamp, if you can forget a stamp then you can forget a return adress.

Just put a real (but not yours) address to be safe, just in case... since it is a reason for that will flag a package (if it meets other reasons).
By the way, welcome back muppet.
Tell us what you did on your week off.
