Subb and Foe gills

For those who pick subbs, do you think the closeness of gills on subbs, compared to the more separated foes is a good enough to determine between the two species.

macroscopically the two mushrooms that you mentioned are often very similar to each other. the key is in the spore color.
Panaeolina render brown spore prints and Panaeolus render black spore prints.

for the most part, both of the mushrooms have the same gill attachment to the untrained eye, and the attachments seem to vary a lot.
-foenisecii gills are adnate (squared off) soon seceding (pulling away from the stem to appear free), usually.
-subbalteatus gills are adnate to uncinate (kind of notched) and most often you can observe 2 or 3 extra tiers of gills near the edge of the margin..
so if you do not understand that very well yet, throw that feature out the window when trying to tell the two apart.

the gill color can be seperated with a good eye.
-Panaeolina foenisecii gills begin as pallid when young and as they mature they darken to brown and then dark brown.
-the gill color of Panaeolus subbalteatus begins as pallid, then to brownish, then become black and mottled (or speckled/spotted with black spores).

also subbalteatus tends to be a slightly larger mushroom, most of the time.

in other words, do a spore print. and read Gumbys page about this topic linked on our rules page,
or see Subbedhunter420's guide too.

this topic has been unlocked because scout24 has something important to add that has not yet been mentioned in the

-Mushroom Hunting Frequently Asked Question page with many links to large mushroom identification websites
-the shroomerys ultimate field guide to magic mushrooms by mjshroomer (who is not a authority with neurotropic mushrooms according to scout24)
-Gumbys subbalteatus page
-Subbhunters subbalteatus page
-The Search Engine
-Related Topics
-Personal Messages
-Google
-and what I said about the two mushrooms in the above reply.

And to that before scout24 enlightens everyone with never before released information about the lamellae of these two mushrooms

Foenisecii basically have moderately broad spaced gills which are slightly enlarged near the center. with extra tiers near the edge of the margin

Subbalteatus gills are close and slightly swollen in the center. With extra tiers of gills inserted near the edge of the margin, and near the edge of the inside margin it is sometimes whitish.

like i have mentioned above and has been mentioned hundreds of times already, to the untrained eye the mushrooms are very similar, so you need to make spore prints to tell the two apart for certain.

And mileage slightly varies from location, collections, habitat, substrate, weather, season and condition.

now prepare to be enlightened by scout24's new information just about to be released about the gills of these two mushrooms

Subbs on top, foes on bottom. Like GG said, the spore print is most important, but gill spacing and color can be used to sift out foes in the field.

Indeed I do: GG has a hard time accepting criticism. Don't question his decision making or you risk a three year ban.

i spend half a hour explaining to you this stuff in personal messages and this is what you have to say. flames. you could have just shared your photograph in its own topic.

"GG has a hard time accepting criticism."
-yeah, are you a therapist or a mushroom hunter.

"Don't question his decision making or you risk a three year ban."
-nobody ever questioned my decision making to get a 3 year ban.
it was something else.
was that you, or are you just whining about something that does not involve yourself and you know nothing about really.

"You're a moderator. This is not your forum."
-stating the obvious. provoking a unecessary flame war.
