Questions I couldn't find answers for in the search feature

I couldn't find the answers to my questions so here it goes. This will be my second grow, first grow turned out pretty good 1 pint WBS to 5 pint poo. After the first flush on my first grow the log shrunk quite a bit from the sides of the container. Maybe 1/4in all around. I was wondering if I could put saturated verm or perlite under the bulk substrate to help keep it hydrated when the shrooms are growing.
Secondly I now what field-capacity is but when you squeeze it, how hard do you squeeze it? Like a firm handshake, or more like a nice boob squeeze? lol I went with the firm handshake route the first time and only a few drops came out. It worked but I think I should of had more water. That's neither here nor there.
Thanks for the help.

but really...how hard should you be squeezing it? I'v gone with the firm hand shake and its worked out well but should it be more gentle than that

Squeeze it hard. With manure or compost, I squeeze as hard as I can and expect a small stream of drips for a second or two and then it should stop. With sawdust, I don't want any water to come out at all when I squeeze as hard as I can.
It's normal for a substrate to shrink. It isn't from drying out. It's from the mycelium eating the substrate, literally. It will get smaller after each flush, even if you dunk. RR

Be careful if using sawdust. Many treated wood (pine from the lumber yard) were coated (in the past) with arsenic. I don't know whether mushroom mycellium will metabolise the arsenic and put it in the mushies, but that's a head's up. Now-a-days lumber is treated with some sort of copper flux. Still...take note!

What are you talking about??? Nobody is using treated lumber. That's for decks. Nobody is using pine because mushrooms, with very few exceptions, hate pine. Lumber is kiln dried and not treated with anything unless you're planning a deck or ground contact, but people don't buy 2 X 6's to grow mushrooms on. RR
