otherworldly looking peyote.
    #7980505 - 02/04/08 10:18 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

a friend had this up on his blog from playing a psytrance party in the huatesca mountains of monterrey, mexico. luckily for them the area was covered in thick, mat like colonies of peyote growing close together. this one that he found was really unusual looking. just thought i'd share the pic.

Very cool.

I hope they didn't harvest any other wild Lophophora.

I don't see anything wrong with taking one if there was 100s and they plan on cultivating it.

according to him, very few people went hunting for them , because few were from the area and knew where to look. hes a Dj so of course, if he asks for peyote the locals are going to help him out  :peyotespectrum:  :yesnod:

it wasnt a big party, from the looks of the rest of the pictures, and the place is so remote i doubt there is any overharvesting taking place. it certainly isn't being harvested there like it is in Real de Catorce, or San Louis Potosi.

I think it's pretty fucked up to harvest wild peyote.

Unless you plan on using it for propagation and cultivation of the species.

Indeed, greater respect should be given to this rare fruit. I don't think even taking one wild peyote is forgivable considering what is happening to them and how slow they grow.

If you want to try it, grow it.

i think the scope of peyote endangerment has to be taken into account of places outside of real and such popular places. there are vasts amounts of habitat in the chihuahaun that is untouched by civilization and visited by very few people.yes peyote needs to be protected because of the rate at which it is being picked for human consumption (esp the native american church, which consumes hundreds of thousands of buttons per year) but that doesn't mean it is a "fucked up" act to harvest it in areas where its abundant, taking care to cut it above the root to allow for new pups to grow. treating it as a sacred sacrament and ingesting isn't fucked up IMO.

that wasnt me dude, it was a friend. i think he picked it to eat it. its ok, in 15 years or so there will be full grown pups replacing that one. obviously you can see, it has been properly separated from the root, so a new one can grow.

man i wouldnt have posted this if i knew there was gonna be so much whining and bitching.

i just thought it looked cool.

It is endangered in the USA.

There are Lophophora left in Mexico...but I wouldn't say tons.

I think if somebody took only one or two and planned on cultivating them, collecting seed and then growing more...

I think that would be ok.

It would be nice if these people would go back out to the wild after 10-15 years when the have a few peyote to spare...and plant a few.

Proper harvesting is also very important.

fuckin great idea!

also in the article

Quote:

But urban development and widespread "root plowing," which scrapes natural vegetation off the land to replace it with grass for cattle grazing, destroyed many of the peyote fields that once sprawled along the U.S.-Mexico border.

And more and more peyote land is off-limits because it is being bought by rich Texans who turn it into hunting preserves, said Martin Terry, a biology professor at Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas.

nice picture, i have yet to visit la huasteca from monterrey , they really harvest the right way, dont worry only because you dont eat yours since is so preciuos does not meat they have to die , i dare some of you to harvet the big head , i know you will never do it since you tread peyote as ornamental, too bad, , but ask many in the peyote church , the plant dont die it grow back more head , i hope some ones does it after all you can replant the head, do it as a experiment, that will you will understand what we do here and what we enjoy. not to say , is not and endangered especies, but peyote are perennial plant if you know how to tread then.

guees you have never seem what indias take , tons my friend tons , so if you respect it , why not , if you not kill the plant , what the problem , but i know is very easy to destroy this plants, many other people dont know how to harvest,
all my best, if we have the world to enjoy and protect why not do so
if you guys live here you where harvesting peyote , so please
i mean the right way since you will learn the plant dont die .

alll my best vibrations.

indeed. but you can buy cultivated peyote off a crtian auction site pretty cheap and that does not risk wild populations which are far far older. buy it from a nursery, and go hiking. you get your spiritual trip, you can still be outdoors hiking (a great place to trip) and the wild peyote can continue the specie. win win.

and yes they will probably grow new heads so long as they are not harvested before a rain storm or wet period...guess thats hard to do...but i would worry about rot. but even the new heads will take a few years to be able to flower again....so it will still slow things down, and that is the best possible scenario.

i'm not trying to flame, i am jsut more of a conservation point of veiw...so if i ran into those i would take my million photos and not touch it. if i felt the need to have it i would go home, go onto google and buy some online and keep the pictures and remember those perfect plants living and reproducing.
