cuz you're my favourite n00bslayer.
why are my shrooms growing outwards instead of upwards? my light source is my energy-saver-spiral bulb (100W equivalent) on my ceiling. My shotgun FC is on my hardwood floor.

because the lid isnt clear, because they are cakes, because the wood reflect light pretty well, becasue you have aluminium foil on the sides
those are some fat mushrooms. What isolate are they

isolate = strain?
they look good to me.
use less foil and a more uni-directional light..
they'll grow towards the light when they open up though.. no pins i have ever seen grow straight up.. unless they are on the top of the cake.

The light is too far away. They're getting most of their light reflected from the perlite. RR

im using the foil on the backside as a reflector since it meets the wall. I dont really have any other option of FC placement in this room.

im not Tahoe, but if the lid is opaque the light they receive is diffused from the plastic on the sides of your fc.
i think that cakes in a fc with an opaque lid will grow towards the still diffused, yet brighter light coming through the translucent sides of the fc.
a fc with a clear lid and a light above it should cause them to grow straight up.
i have yet to actually put any of this to the test. but judging from photos of other peoples research i believe that is whats going on here.

Before we delve any further, am I running the risk of fucking up my grow by not having a clear lid?
What if I were to mod the opaque lid to give it some clear plexi-glass panels?

Nope let the shrooms grow where they want to. They'll still make you trip even if they grow upside down.

It really doesn't matter which way they grow, growing straight up won't make them any fatter, thicker, or more potent.

Your only concern with even pin sets is if your doing a casing show off, generally you want them picture perfect for things like that.
Pf cake's are different, they have a cylinder shaped surface area and will grow every which way since no matter where the light source is coming from, top, bottom, down, up, they're going to grow which ever way they desire.
Like I said, casings are different, since there is a casing material on the surface and it is bulk you want to avoid side pinning so you don't have to damage the mycelium by removing it from the container to pick at the one's on the side.

VERY common with cakes. Most cakes in perlite FCs get fruits growing straight out from the side. Sometimes, they even grow pointing down.

my set up looks very much like yours. shotgun, on wood, with a little too much foil. and my shrooms grow the same way. some have even started to go down and explore the perilite. i dont worry about it. they still grow nice and big, and they still taste good
