Where do you guys buy your computer parts?
    #7980129 - 02/04/08 09:25 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

I'm not talking about the obvious things like drives, MoBos, processors, RAM, etc. I'm talking about all the little misc. crap that you come across that you might need.

Heres why I ask...my wifes computer started making a noise so I opened the cover. Turned out the bearings were taking a shit on the CPU fan. So I thought, "No problem, pop in a new fan and I'm good to go." So I pull out the offending item and start looking. Much to my surprise I have absolutely no luck finding a replacement fan! It was just a standard 70mm variable speed CPU fan but nobody had one. Couldn't even find anything like that at newegg (where I buy a lot of my stuff).

After 2 days of listening to the wife bitch about her computer being down I just went to the store and bought an entire heatsink/fan combo that I could snap in and get her machine running again. (This turned out to be another ordeal when I pulled out the old heatsink and it yanked the entire processor out with it! Had to figure out how to get the processor unstuck.)

Anyway, the new heatsink/fan seems to be just fine. Probably even a better replacement then the original (its a larger heatsink with a larger fan). But I had to drop $15 on it. I'm sure if I could've found the fan I needed it would've cost less, probably a lot less. So where do you go to buy all the miscellaneous crap like that? I can't find any really good parts stores here in San Diego. I knew of one or two in Vegas but for all I know they are out of business now as well. Do you guys have any good on-line sites for the next time I need something like that?

Actually Fry's is where I bought the replacement heatsink/fan combo.  Their selection of fans was about as good as anything I could find, but it was limited to mostly 60mm, 80mm, and 120mm case fans.  Nothing at all in 70mm and nothing in a variable speed CPU fan like the one that took a shit on me.

Yea, I was going to say fry's electronics. But ebay has a better selection. For $15, its probably not worth much time looking.

Here is a crazy situation that happened to me.

I am playing my game, and hear a slight thud/crash. I look over at my wife, but it wasnt her. Whatever. Then about 30 seconds later I hear BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP! Of course I immediately turn off the power, while pondering the odd events. I pull the cover off of my box and my heat sink had broken the mount that it attaches to and fallen on to my video card! I have a big aftermarket heat sink, and the torque just ripped the prong that holds it right off.

I need my computer up and running asap, so I go to frys electronics to find a new bracket. Preferably one that is better than stock. No luck. Fry's doesnt have shit. I left there thinking what a piece of shit store, Im never going back. I found a better, stronger bracket off of ebay for under $10. I did have to wait a few days though.

a bracket for a heatsink?

i mean that's a pretty specific item and fry's has a lot of that shit.

i dunno i mean they've always had what i need when i go there.. except for good ipod touch cases.. i ended up getting a griffin one at walmart for $15 that's way fuckin better than all those other ones out there.

Only for old school shit like socket A

haha, actually my htpc is a socket A.  The very CPU that was given to me by the gracious OP.  The processor was manufactured in 1999 and still gives me great performance on high-def video and all music  :wexican:

I religiously go to altex. I think they are confined to south texas, but no matter what i want, they have it.

Plus they have like 6 other things i want that i didn't remember or realize. I hope they spread across the country because they deserve it.

Are they the objects you really value? If they are not, you are cheating yourself. I don't meant that if you chose to pursue the objects you most value, you will attain them; of course not. Your experience will tell you that. But success in getting after much labor what you really don't care for is the bitterest and most ridiculous failure." -George Santayana

Use a hairdryer to warm the heatsink up. This will soften the TIM allowing you to remove the heatsink without stressing the chip.

You got a pretty good deal. Down here, heatsink fans can run $20 or more.
