san pedro question
    #7979262 - 02/04/08 06:55 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

Just wondering if the size(diameter) of the core will vary from Pedro to Pedro... seems most I have seen are only about 3/4ths inch in diameter.

Does the core get wider as the cactus gets older and more mature? Reason I ask is that I have just acquired a new 24" Pedro cutting(what I believe to be Pedro), but the core is almost 2"s in diameter in the thickest area.

Just wondering if this would cancel out the option of it being Pedro. It is a VERY dehydrated specimen, the ribs are sucked wayyy in.. so it is not the easiest to ID. It all checks out to me, but I am very new to this also.

Thank you

Yes, the core gets wider on more mature plants. I have a few with cores that size.

A pic would help confirm though.

For fucks sake teo, did you even read the question ?

I have noticed cuts appear to vary with age, yes.
Some plants the same diameter but known to be older tip cuts have had a core around 1.5-2x the size of the younger cuts.
I have also seen bridgesii with cores double the size of a pach around the same size.

Results may vary its just what I have noticed in passing, don't think it would be reliable to ID with though.

Hey,

Dont worry about it mate! The core can get extremely thick on pedros, in my experience if the pedro/cacti is exposed to lots of wind the core tends to be woodier and thicker. I saw a 2' pedro cutting the other day that had a core far thicker than 2".
