I love Merle's version.
Its incredible the amount of old-school country music that I have because of the Dead...

Here is the oldest version I have. Im not sure when it was made, but I like it better than Cash's as well. Check it out.
I like the song, though it is quite hickish. Thx for your upload, I look forward to hearing it in a few minutes.

I like the version you uploaded, its sounds kind of irish. Less hillbilly than the version I uploaded. Its wierd hearing it without background singers though.
Here is the wikipedia entry for the song, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riders_in_the_Sky:_A_Cowboy_Legend
Says that it was written in 48, so yours is probably one of the oldest. It also says its regarded as one of the greatest country songs ever.
Some more good old country.... Im sure most of you are old and in the way fans, here is the original version of muleskinner blues if you dont already have. Its by the founder of country music, Jimmie Rodgers.

Thanks. I liked that version, DC. The Burl Ives version is definitely the first though. It's on that wikipedia page that you posted................
Quote:
The original version, by Burl Ives, was recorded on February 17, 1949 and released by Columbia Records as catalog number 38445. The recording first appeared on the Billboard charts on April 22, 1949, lasting 6 weeks and peaking at position #21.
I'll check out the other song that you posted tonight after work. Thanks.
