I have a CD I wanna upload to what.cd and I have no idea what I'm doing.
Yes, I looked through Google, I just didn't get anything simple enough for my shitty computer skills.

just rip it to lossless quality (high bitrate) and then make a torrent out of it.

The only way I know how to rip shit is through iTunes, definitely not lossless.

i'd imagine if iTunes offers ripping, they would offer a lossless format...
i'm at work right now and cant really check, but maybe look at the ripping config and see what it says..
if not, put it at at least 320kbps.. that sounds as good as you are gonna need for most purposes..
unless you are a straight audiophile and it doesn't sound like you are and it has a little smaller file size.

iTunes doesn't play lossless, so I'll be damned if they ripped lossless. I'm not an audiophile, but the people on private tracker sites are.

what are you talking about?
why would it not PLAY lossless?
that just doesn't make sense to me.
maybe we are talking about different things..
just look at the ripping configuration in the itunes options menu and i'm pretty sure you will find it.
i haven't ripped a cd in a long, long time though so i dont know.
if there is no lossless format, then just ask your buddies online what they recommend.. all i have heard about as far as audio ripping lossless is winamp or foobar or something like that..

Because it doesn't play lossless shit. If I download a .flac torrent from a site, I can't play it in iTunes, I gotta use VLC or some shit.

I use foobar2000. It plays all the formats I have tried. It's the tits.

and .flac isn't .mp3 or .m4a or .m4p or whatever the gay itunes format is.

ya i've never used foobar and i'm pretty sure it does ripping too..
i'm pretty sure winamp does but i'm not 100% as i am at work right now and cant really check to give you a definite answer..

whoa, you're giving all kinds of misinformation.
1) an mp3 of a high bitrate is NOT LOSSLESS. it's just a quality mp3. mp3 files will always be lossy. always.
2) iTunes sucks dick as a ripper. if you're really interested in having quality rips, then you need Exact Audio Copy (EAC).
3) bear in mind that lossless format (wav, flac, monkey audio lossless) is going to take up quite a bit more room than lossy files. so if you really want to have an archive of lossless files, make sure you've got a big harddrive. also, if you haven't got a huge drive, consider ripping high quality mp3s, which are lossy, but unless you've got top-o-the-line audiophile equipment, you won't be able to tell the difference.
4) if you still want flac, then follow this guide

if you've now decided you want high quality mp3 rips (which is what i prefer), you'll need to download LAME v3.97 encoder, then follow these 2 guides to configure EAC & LAME to rip the way you want (seeing as how you want top quality, i would recommend -V 0 --vbr-new for optimum saved space without sacrificing quality; it's varible bitrate (~220 to 256), meaning the bitrate fluctuates with specific parts of songs and it puts more where more are needed, less where less are needed, so that you can get the most out of the space being used up). or you could just do a simple -b 320 which would give you a constant bitrate of 320. whether or not you can tell a difference between the two is something you'll have to determine.

i never said high bitrate mp3 = lossless. read my post.
i hate itunes. read my other posts. i was just answering his questions with 'could it be done' and suggested other programs.
i also told him that he could just encode 320 and save some file size, but i'm sure that he knows that it's a large file size already since he's downloaded .flac's and the like before.
dont be so quick to flame me, buddy.
and then you go on to tell him to rip to 320 and that 'you cant tell the difference' which is essentially what i said earlier, or at least what i meant to convey.. if it was interpreted wrong on your end then i'm sorry i'll have to use better word choice and be more concise next time.
i feel as though i answered the OP's questions and that's all i was trying to do.
question is..
does vbr = lossless?
he was talking he needs 'lossless' and you are telling him to go variable bit rate and i dont believe that they are the same thing.. and you go and flame me for suggesting the same thing with the 320 encoding.. with vbr there some type of compression, which means there is some type of loss even though it might be negligible to the human ear.
i agree with what you're suggesting and i think it's a good idea but plz dont flame me for trying to help this kid and correctly answering his questions.
i'm obviously not as experienced as you with cd ripping, but i at least know what i'm talking about enough to answer this kid's question.

this quote appears to me that you're saying high quality/high bitrate mp3s are lossless, which they're not. yes, the difference may be indistinguishable without hi-fi equipment, but they're still not lossless. which is why i said you're giving misinformation and specified 1). the rest of the points were addressed to jew, to give him a guide on how to start.
vbr = variable bitrate. not it's not lossless. however i know that what.cd accepts v0 and v2 vbr mp3s.

not all high bitrate files are lossless, but all lossless files are high bitrate..
from my understanding lossless = no compression

because there is a difference. there are specifically lossless filetypes. mp3 is not one of them, regardless of the bitrate. i'm not being nitpicky, just distinguishing the very real difference.

terabyte drives are cheap as fuck these days, and only getting cheaper. by the time you fill your 500 up with flac files, it'll only cost like 100 bucks to get another full tb.

i agree.
i'm right now wishing that i would have opted for the terabyte..
but it keeps me cycling through my old movies and getting rid of them..
keeps me on my toes and makes me stay organized..
i usually stay under 20 gigs free at all times though..
