I live in New England and cannot find any cow manure here until March and need a sub for manure. I have straw ready to go but I need something nutritious to mix with it, that I can get now. My spawn was ready days ago. Thanks.

Coir. Most will agree. If you ask "The Man" he'll say the same thing.

Wouldn't that take the place of the straw that I use to fluff the manure? Coir being the same consistency as straw and not very nutritious.

Where do you come up with this stuff? Coir has as much fungi food as manure, and straw nearly has as much. You can do great grows on straw alone. RR

I come up with this stuff from from consistently hearing people using coir as a casing material, but I'm sure everything you know is gold, right?

Let me bust out my handy dandy notebook on substrates from The Mushroom Cultivator and see what it says
EDIT: well it didnt have anything on coco coir itself but I know it has just as much if not more in some grades nutritional value of manure.

There is plenty of livestock in New England. And yes, they poo in the winter too.

I use coir alone in in vitro bags works awesome and I use it uncased in mono tubs.
Just remember to always start pinning a little earlier then you would if you used poo to keep it from overlay if you don't use a casein or if you do case it a bit earlier too
I find the top layer tends to dry out easier then poo if you don't watch it but wax paper will fix that.
