AVG free has worked well for me. I have also heard of a program called NOD32 that is supposedly pretty good.

avg free is a good free one, but if your just gonna download one get kasperskey anti-virus and there firewall. also if your using a bit-torrent site downlaod peer guardian and run that also.

node32 and avg are basically the same. one isn't better than the other and one isn't worse than the other all anti viruses are basically the same, the only real determining factor in how well they work is oh big there database is and how often its updated. there will never be a program that can keep your computer completely virus, Trojan, worm free, cause it would have to ad the bugs that are being created right now as this is being read too the database that prevents them from being opened on your PC. [/rant] anyways, a firewall will also help because if you do somehow release a Trojan on your machine it will detect the outgoing connection and stop it. so if your trying too secure your box, download a combo, but make sure its nothing by symantec or mcaffee, they will do more bad for your machine than they will good.

If you havent already, also obtain a free copy of HijackThis & Spybot-S&D -- Ive found them relevant also for what youre doing.

What sort of stuff u download? I dl a lot of vids mostly and never get virii. I dont use any anti-virus, just win xp firewall.

Last time i got a virus (only time in like 4 yrs) was when i turned IE security level down and forgot to turn it back up, then visited a dodgy website and had it start installing some anti-spyware thing, along with a load of spyware!

As long as you're careful what executable files you run, you shouldn't get a virus from downloaded stuff. Just extracting a rar and opening a pdf, avi, mp3 or whatever won't give you a virus.

The setup.exe of some app could easily conceal something though, but it won't do anything unless you run it. Free antivirus like avg should be fine for checking before you run it.

same here. i rarely ever have any problems...but when i use to use anti-virus programs, i always had problems...sometimes i think that a lot of the anti-virus software is really just spyware.

i do use ad-aware though.

Avast is good.
Free.
And it detects trojans and warns you of them before you have a chance to use them. I've been using it for a while now with torrents and it has saved my ass a couple times.
