Ferrets are great pets, and they don't smell bad unless you don't clean up after them. They're easily litter box trained. But, they're a lot of work - you'd have to "ferret proof" your house....they like to steal things.

also, like mentioned earlier a ferret would be good. or a rabbit, both are easily litterbox trainable. only downside is you have to ferret/rabbit proof your house.

this thing is pretty cool. i should research it and see if it would be easy to take care of.

- The African civet has short, dense fur that is a greyish color, with black spots arranged in rows along their bodies. Their legs and about 2/3 of their tail is black, with about a third of the base of their tail having striped markings. Their face is solid grey except for a white muzzle and black markings around the eyes that lead down the face. Their long necks have bars of white and black running down the sides, usually one white bar enclosed by two black bars, one above and one below. They have a short mane of about 1-4 inches (3-10 cm) in length that runs along their back. This mane becomes erect when the animal is frightened.

How about a bird? They can be out of the cage a lot if you're around to keep an eye on them and honestly they don't seem to mind being in a cage at night and they even chill in there to play with their toys if the door's open.
Birds are surprisingly funny and so cute! I used to have a parakeet and he was a lot of fun! He flew around shitting on everything. He died though.

ferrets are bad news. i've had chinchillas roam free and they like the security of their cage. they will actually go back to their cage/nest box if you don't force it on them. they are smarter than cats too. they'll climb all over you and can be a really good friend. you would just have to find where they choose to piss which is usually in their cage corner. they will chew anything though and you would have to vaccum or sweep up their dry turds daily. hedgehogs do great as roaming pets too, especially if you have a place without carpet. don't get a skunk. i had one once and they are the messiest animals ever, especially when they eat or shit. there are some really cool exotic pet websites that have some strange animals like coatamundi, bush baby, kinkajou, civet. they're all really expensive though and can tear your place apart. just get a fox in another state and smuggle it in, keep quiet about it. a box turtle is a good one too but needs to spend alot of time under a reptile light and needs lots of heat. if you just set up an open sandy/sunny area, it'll go there on its own.

What about a chicken. I heard about a lot of people in urban areas that raise chickens. The only worry is the droppings, not sure if you can litter box train a chicken. Other wise I hear they are friendly, roaming animals. Get a rooster and piss off your neighbors.

I'm on a lease that won't permit dogs either, but I went out and got my homeboy here anyway
I got him about two weeks ago, he's 5 months old and a way, way chill black lab pup. Hasn't really been hard keeping knowledge of his presence secret at our house so I don't really give a shit about my landlord
I'd say dogs are really the only animal capable of the type of affection I'm after, so I can't really speak/recommend any other animals - just a steady for good tempered pups

Ferrets can make a decent amount of noise too, I should note. When they get excited, they squeak, hiss, and make a clucking noise. It's quite funny. Also, they like to dig at stuff. Ours have a little sandbox that we let them burrow in.

Our ferrets are all litter box trained - they have the occasional accident, but they don't tend to poop where you can't find it. They just poop in whatever corner is closest. Also, they're not big chewers....and when they do chew, they tend to chew on rubbery things, not stuff like wires. For instance, my ferrets like the Wii remotes because they have the latex covers on them....and they LOVE pacifiers. I brought one home from work one day accidentally and they stole it and ran away with it. ALSO, the word ferret means "little thief" in Latin....so be prepared. They like anything shiny, and will hoarde your things in a corner, in a big pile. When we moved in to our new house, we took the bed out of the room and discovered a huge pile of our stuff in the far corner under the bed....earrings, socks, pens, slippers....you name it. They'll steal shit that is 4 times their size with no hesitation. But, they're really really fun pets Mine even know some hand signals!

I used to have a bunny and he was the coolest pet. He would use his litter box and spend a lot of time in his cage just hanging out. They drop a lot of pellets but they don't stink. Rabbits are pretty smart pets and they have a lot of personality. I used to put a harness on him and tie him on a leash in the yard, he would just chill and eat grass.

ferrets are bad news because they don't respect anything and are persistant, especially when it's something you don't want them to do. they love to shit behind the litter box or in front of it where it meets the wall. i even have special ferret litter boxes and they don't give a shit. your whole house will stink like them too and you won't notice. everyone else will though. they also love to burrow through the litter which is fucking gross when you want to pick them up. i have two of them. i also have 96 chinchillas, yes, 96 and they are cheap unless you get them at a pet store. i sell mine for 20-100 bucks depending on the fur color and quality/size. their poop also makes great compost. they also have the softest fur on earth. they are the easiest pet to care for other than a cat and they love hanging out with people. they can also live for 20 years and most ferrets die at 5-7 years. males are the best though for some reason. the females have a different body structure and are more delicate when they are picked up. they will kick the shit out of a cat too. it's hilarious to see a cat pick on one and have the chinchilla fly at it from all angles ripping out chunks of fur. the cat can't even figure out what's going on. they hate loud music though and will let you know that they're unhappy by barking. they also do better in a herd. yes, they are called chinchilla herds. they are born fully fured with eyes open and able to run and jump too. their barking can be loud though.

My ferrets don't burrow in their litter boxes, and don't shit next to them or behind them. If they are able to move their litter boxes they will move them and THEN they will go in the corner, behind the litter box, but we fasten ours so that they can't be moved from their spot. Also, when we take them out of their habitat, we put a litter box down on the floor and they automatically go in it, even though there are 1 million other corners they could shit in. I have 5 ferrets (previously 6...) and I don't think that our house smells like ferrets. My Mom, who's extremely critical of the amount of animals that I have, even comments on how it doesn't smell like we have any Of course, if we didn't change the litter boxes so often, it WOULD stink in here....so you have to keep up with them.
96 chinchillas? Jesus. Are you a registered breeder??

Yeah - I think chinchillas actually chew way more than ferrets do. Ferrets aren't big on chewing - but they do like carrying stuff around.

my chinchillas actually enjoy loud music, not REALLY loud music, but they don't mind it being loud in general as their hearing is very similar to ours, despite what their large ears may tell you.

i've always had at least two so that they can talk to and snuggle with each other. they seems to be happier when there is more than one.
but you have to be careful with mixing the males and females because if the male is larger than the female and she gets pregnant it will more than likely cause hemorrhaging when she gives birth and the mother will die.
this happened to my first set of chinchillas. she had 3 babies (not that common, they usually only have one, sometimes two) and they were too big because the male was double her size. two of the babies died, one lived, i still have him and he's one of the biggest chinchillas i've ever seen.
they are great pets though.

keeps their fur soft. you can't give them water baths, their fur is so fine it gets all matted when they get wet. the dust keeps them from getting all 'oily' so to speak.
it's really cute when they take their dust baths too. they dig a little then roll over in it several times. very cute.

That does sound awfully cute. I wish that one of them would take a duct bath while I was in the pet store and could watch!

it's really too cute for words. they roll around and get all covered in dust then hop out and rub their noses with their little front paws. it's making me smile just thinking about it. i gotta snuggle the baby now, i'll have to take a couple pics, he's unbelievably cute.
he's a little multicoloured ball of pure adorable. light grey with a white underside, a white band across his shoulders, white tipped tail and little white stripes down the centre of each ear. yeah, i definitely need to get some good pics.

Oh man, I need to see pictures, stat! I wish I could have other small animals, but ferrets are vicious towards other small furries, and would probably kill anything we brought home, or at least try to We wanted to get a rabbit and we spoke with the lady who we adopted Wolverine through about the idea, and she said that she would be shocked if the rabbit wasn't dead within 1 hour. So....we didn't get a rabbit, needless to say!

i have 96 chinchillas because i breed them and need lots of manure for my organic farm. i can sell babies and it pays for their food. they do chew like rabbits though and you should place chew items around your house like pumice blocks and clean apple branches. only make their boxes out of pine wood, not fir or cedar. oh, and you should never attempt to breed the smaller females at all. they do have complications and their babies will be weak, and the mother most likely will lose all babies except maybe one in the first few days because she won't have enough body mass to provide enough nutrition for them. it's unethical for breeders to breed the smaller ones and they usually end up being nervous fur chewers anyway.

i already said that i use their poop and bedding for compost. they are easier to care for than rabbits and their poop composts easier. that many rabbits would stink my whole farm up too and rabbits die way too easy. they live in a heated and air conditioned barn in 4'x4'x4' cages. they are also happier in large numbers. i never hear any of them bark. if they did bark, it would mean that they are unhappy or nervous. i don't sell them for furs if that's what you're wondering. that's fucking sick. pets and poop only. their compost piles can heat up to 178 degrees fahrenheit. as far as pictures go, i can't figure out how to upload them from my damn kodak software.

easier to care for than rabbits? i haven't found that to be the case as i have both and find the rabbits much easier to care for and they stink just as much as my chinchillas do. i don't find that my rabbits die very easily at all. sure they don't deal with respiratory infections well, but neither do chinchillas and my rabbit compost is probably just as good as your chinchilla compost.
drSE: no pics yet, my camera batteries died and we are conveniently out of replacement batteries. i'll post some pics when i can.

nope, chinchilla compost is better than rabbit and you would have to add some straw or hay to it for it to compost correctly. i have a certified organic farm and it just works better. chinchilla food is higher in protein than rabbit food. rabbits drink alot more water and eat more. if one rabbit dies, it spreads to the next one like dominoes. i've never seen an outbreak of disease in my chinchillas. i might lose one or two in a year. my father used to have a rabbit farm and the whole property stank. nobody even wanted to go over there it was so stinky. you have to constantly replace rabbits too since they live such short lives. they kick the shit out of you if you want to pick them up. they are impossible to catch if they get loose and chinchillas stick around their herd. rabbit piss is extremely caustic to cage wire and needs constant repair. i've never had to replace chinchilla cage bottoms. chinchillas can also live in large family groups in the same cage and rabbits need to be separated. female rabbits will kill their babies if they're anywhere near a male and males will castrate and kill each other. a loud car came into my fathers driveway once and the mama rabbits killed every single one of their babies, probably about a hundred or so. it was tragic. you can't even touch the babies either. chinchillas almost never kill their babies for any reason. they are actually protective of them. male chinchillas make good companions for each other if you don't want to breed them. i could go on and on, maybe i just like chinchillas better.

i raise rabbits, i have 25 of them. their pen doesn't stink (granted if you don't regularly clean their area it will stink, as it will with chinchillas), nor do they drop like dominoes if one of them dies. rabbits live up to 12 years if taken care of properly, that's not much shorter than chinchillas live. they are extremely friendly and have no problem letting you pick them up even though they run loose in a pen, it all depends on if they've been properly socialised (same with chinchillas). they live in family groups and form strong bonds with other members of their warren. the only time i separate them is when i don't want them breeding and i have never had the females kill their babies just because there are males present. that has never happened to me in my 11 years of raising rabbits. the only time they will kill the babies is if they feel that there is not enough room and food in the area to sustain the warren. sounds to me like you just like chinchillas better and have no real experience with rabbits as everything you've stated is false in my experience. granted chinchillas are awesome and i love mine to death, but i am definitely more attached to my rabbits as they are more like dogs than rodents. to each their own.

mine is extremely friendly, but he gets held A LOT and has been held a lot since we got him.

he'll grow to about 5-5.5ft when fully grown, he's about a foot long not including his tail. isn't he just adorable?
