keeps their fur soft. you can't give them water baths, their fur is so fine it gets all matted when they get wet. the dust keeps them from getting all 'oily' so to speak.

it's really cute when they take their dust baths too. they dig a little then roll over in it several times. very cute.

That does sound awfully cute. I wish that one of them would take a duct bath while I was in the pet store and could watch!

it's really too cute for words. they roll around and get all covered in dust then hop out and rub their noses with their little front paws. it's making me smile just thinking about it. i gotta snuggle the baby now, i'll have to take a couple pics, he's unbelievably cute.

he's a little multicoloured ball of pure adorable. light grey with a white underside, a white band across his shoulders, white tipped tail and little white stripes down the centre of each ear. yeah, i definitely need to get some good pics.

Oh man, I need to see pictures, stat!  I wish I could have other small animals, but ferrets are vicious towards other small furries, and would probably kill anything we brought home, or at least try to :frown:  We wanted to get a rabbit and we spoke with the lady who we adopted Wolverine through about the idea, and she said that she would be shocked if the rabbit wasn't dead within 1 hour.  So....we didn't get a rabbit, needless to say!

i have 96 chinchillas because i breed them and need lots of manure for my organic farm. i can sell babies and it pays for their food. they do chew like rabbits though and you should place chew items around your house like pumice blocks and clean apple branches. only make their boxes out of pine wood, not fir or cedar. oh, and you should never attempt to breed the smaller females at all. they do have complications and their babies will be weak, and the mother most likely will lose all babies except maybe one in the first few days because she won't have enough body mass to provide enough nutrition for them. it's unethical for breeders to breed the smaller ones and they usually end up being nervous fur chewers anyway.

i already said that i use their poop and bedding for compost. they are easier to care for than rabbits and their poop composts easier. that many rabbits would stink my whole farm up too and rabbits die way too easy. they live in a heated and air conditioned barn in 4'x4'x4' cages. they are also happier in large numbers. i never hear any of them bark. if they did bark, it would mean that they are unhappy or nervous. i don't sell them for furs if that's what you're wondering. that's fucking sick. pets and poop only. their compost piles can heat up to 178 degrees fahrenheit. as far as pictures go, i can't figure out how to upload them from my damn kodak software.

easier to care for than rabbits? i haven't found that to be the case as i have both and find the rabbits much easier to care for and they stink just as much as my chinchillas do. i don't find that my rabbits die very easily at all. sure they don't deal with respiratory infections well, but neither do chinchillas and my rabbit compost is probably just as good as your chinchilla compost.

drSE: no pics yet, my camera batteries died and we are conveniently out of replacement batteries. i'll post some pics when i can.

nope, chinchilla compost is better than rabbit and you would have to add some straw or hay to it for it to compost correctly. i have a certified organic farm and it just works better. chinchilla food is higher in protein than rabbit food. rabbits drink alot more water and eat more. if one rabbit dies, it spreads to the next one like dominoes. i've never seen an outbreak of disease in my chinchillas. i might lose one or two in a year. my father used to have a rabbit farm and the whole property stank. nobody even wanted to go over there it was so stinky. you have to constantly replace rabbits too since they live such short lives. they kick the shit out of you if you want to pick them up. they are impossible to catch if they get loose and chinchillas stick around their herd. rabbit piss is extremely caustic to cage wire and needs constant repair. i've never had to replace chinchilla cage bottoms. chinchillas can also live in large family groups in the same cage and rabbits need to be separated. female rabbits will kill their babies if they're anywhere near a male and males will castrate and kill each other. a loud car came into my fathers driveway once and the mama rabbits killed every single one of their babies, probably about a hundred or so. it was tragic. you can't even touch the babies either. chinchillas almost never kill their babies for any reason. they are actually protective of them. male chinchillas make good companions for each other if you don't want to breed them. i could go on and on, maybe i just like chinchillas better.

i raise rabbits, i have 25 of them. their pen doesn't stink (granted if you don't regularly clean their area it will stink, as it will with chinchillas), nor do they drop like dominoes if one of them dies. rabbits live up to 12 years if taken care of properly, that's not much shorter than chinchillas live. they are extremely friendly and have no problem letting you pick them up even though they run loose in a pen, it all depends on if they've been properly socialised (same with chinchillas). they live in family groups and form strong bonds with other members of their warren. the only time i separate them is when i don't want them breeding and i have never had the females kill their babies just because there are males present. that has never happened to me in my 11 years of raising rabbits. the only time they will kill the babies is if they feel that there is not enough room and food in the area to sustain the warren. sounds to me like you just like chinchillas better and have no real experience with rabbits as everything you've stated is false in my experience. granted chinchillas are awesome and i love mine to death, but i am definitely more attached to my rabbits as they are more like dogs than rodents. to each their own.

mine is extremely friendly, but he gets held A LOT and has been held a lot since we got him.

he'll grow to about 5-5.5ft when fully grown, he's about a foot long not including his tail. isn't he just adorable?
