he wants something that can roam his house, a chinchilla wouldn't be good for that, they're messy little fucks, i should now, i've got 4 of them plus a new baby chinchilla that is uber cute.

also, like mentioned earlier a ferret would be good. or a rabbit, both are easily litterbox trainable. only downside is you have to ferret/rabbit proof your house.

this thing is pretty cool. i should research it and see if it would be easy to take care of.

- The African civet has short, dense fur that is a greyish color, with black spots arranged in rows along their bodies. Their legs and about 2/3 of their tail is black, with about a third of the base of their tail having striped markings. Their face is solid grey except for a white muzzle and black markings around the eyes that lead down the face. Their long necks have bars of white and black running down the sides, usually one white bar enclosed by two black bars, one above and one below. They have a short mane of about 1-4 inches (3-10 cm) in length that runs along their back. This mane becomes erect when the animal is frightened.

How about a bird? They can be out of the cage a lot if you're around to keep an eye on them and honestly they don't seem to mind being in a cage at night and they even chill in there to play with their toys if the door's open.
Birds are surprisingly funny and so cute! I used to have a parakeet and he was a lot of fun! He flew around shitting on everything. He died though.

ferrets are bad news. i've had chinchillas roam free and they like the security of their cage. they will actually go back to their cage/nest box if you don't force it on them. they are smarter than cats too. they'll climb all over you and can be a really good friend. you would just have to find where they choose to piss which is usually in their cage corner. they will chew anything though and you would have to vaccum or sweep up their dry turds daily. hedgehogs do great as roaming pets too, especially if you have a place without carpet. don't get a skunk. i had one once and they are the messiest animals ever, especially when they eat or shit. there are some really cool exotic pet websites that have some strange animals like coatamundi, bush baby, kinkajou, civet. they're all really expensive though and can tear your place apart. just get a fox in another state and smuggle it in, keep quiet about it. a box turtle is a good one too but needs to spend alot of time under a reptile light and needs lots of heat. if you just set up an open sandy/sunny area, it'll go there on its own.

What about a chicken. I heard about a lot of people in urban areas that raise chickens. The only worry is the droppings, not sure if you can litter box train a chicken. Other wise I hear they are friendly, roaming animals. Get a rooster and piss off your neighbors.

do you have a no pet policy or just no dog/cat policy?
i had a no pet policy on my last apartment and decided to get a ferret thinking it would be easy to hide. the fucker squeezed under the door and invaded my neighbors apartment. i got evicted the next day.
ferrets are little bandits man. if you buy one, you're playing with fire.

I'm on a lease that won't permit dogs either, but I went out and got my homeboy here anyway
I got him about two weeks ago, he's 5 months old and a way, way chill black lab pup. Hasn't really been hard keeping knowledge of his presence secret at our house so I don't really give a shit about my landlord
I'd say dogs are really the only animal capable of the type of affection I'm after, so I can't really speak/recommend any other animals - just a steady for good tempered pups
