Are these mushrooms still alright to eat? - Plus a couple other questions from a newbie.

So far, I have never tried shrooms.
Next to me lies a little purple package of 'Stropharia Cubensis' - Mexican mushrooms in the shop, straight from Amsterdam.
I bought this about a week ago at a smart shop, but we didn't have enough time in Amsterdam with all the clubbing to actually take them, so we brought them back.
Here's their timeline:
1. Bought from shop, straight out of the fridge 2. Put in a pocket for about 6 hours, then put in a fridge 3. Remained in the fridge for about 5 days, put in luggage to bring home. 4. Sitting next to me now, have not been refrigerated for about 3 days.
The package is all steamy and watery, and the mushrooms have got a lot... mushier, with a couple having the heads falling off. A couple heads also have black spots on them and the stems are going blackish-greenish-greyish. They were not perfect looking in the first place, but they certainly dont look as fresh as they used to.
Now, the package says the sell by date is in over a week, but only if it's refrigerated the whole time.
Here's some pics:

Keep in mind they look quite a bit worse than they do in the pictures.
I may or may not be able to refrigerate them now, depending on whether my extra fridge works, if not, they will go without refrigeration, in moderate temperatures (maybe 15 degrees average).
Will I still be able to take these? Shall I take them out of the package to get a better look (it's airtight)? Shall I dry them?
And lastly, a completely differewnt question of opinion.
Considering this will be my first time I need to know one thing:
I have exams coming up in roughly 2 months. I have an improvised exam in 2 weeks. Out of your experience, will these leave any effects that might affect my grades at all. I need these exams to be perfect - or I'm not going to get the ridiculously high univeristy offer I have. I smoke weed almost every day (hence Amsterdam), but I've reduced it to the weekends now. I find that whilst it doesn't affect me too much, overall long-term use has reduced my concentration and memory. I have a very fragile mind, with quite bad ADD, but have a lot of past drug use, so I'm only worried about how this may affect me afterwards.
Have you guys found that after one use it has affected memory, logic, cognitive faculties in any way whatsoever? I don't want to fuck my future up based on one trip. This may sound farfetched but my level of concentration is paramount to my grades in exams - if I can't keep it under control it will make the difference between passing and failing.
So have any of you found that 1 use of shrooms have had any affect on any cognitive use whatsoever? Yeh, I sound completely 'noid, I know, but I can always wait 4 months if I need to.
Thanks - any other advice would be appreciated. Phoenix

I envy you - lucky bastard
I really can't say mushrooms affect my memory in any way. Unlike alcohol and opiates.. which just totally blow away any memory of the experience, I find psychedelics don't take away my memory much at all, even during the most intense parts of trips. In fact, I remember those moments the most, hah!
Especially if you have 2 months to wait, I think you'll be absolutely fine. Probably even more prepared mentally than you would be if you didn't take 'em. If it were a matter of taking the shrooms say, tonight, and having exams tomorrow... totally different story, heh. I always need a day of recovery & reflection, at least.

Just eat the bastards, i've chomped down much worse looking shrooms (they had fucking blue edges) That or just put in some water and simmer for 45 mins and drink the liquid.

They look ok to me in those pics, though your description sounded like they were starting to rot/mold. I think worst case they'll just make you sick and you'll throw them up, but you'll still trip.
I wouldn't be too worried about it, if your not going to eat them in the next day or 2 though I'd stick them in front of a fan to dry them out. I believe mushrooms go bad faster in a closed container too, I'd imagine they'd be better just sitting open in the fridge than in that container but I dunno, if it's already air tight like you say then that may be best. Anyways, put em in front of a fan or eat them tonight.
The only lasting side effects I generally have from mushrooms is a clearer head, better concentration, and I feel more fulfilled in everything I do . Enjoy man.

The blue edges were just bruising, that's totally fine and often happens minutes after picking them.

Right, well - most of it is blue. They would be very bruised considering they did travel to a new country.
I can't get them in the fridge tonight, so I hope they'll be alright for tommorow.
I actually heard dried mushrooms were more potent - is this true?

It sounds like those are starting to rot. If you eat them, you should be prepared to get food poisoning - not a pleasant experience in general, and likely worse while under the influence of a psychedelic.
If you're set on eating them, make tea. However, the smart move would be to toss them.

I generally agree with this opinion.
If it were me, and I were set on taking them, I would do it a little differently, though...
I would put them in a blender or food processor and turn them into mushroom mush, taking care to pulse it, and not run the motor so long it gets hot.
Then I would add some alcohol. Probably 100 proof vodka, would be good. Psilocybin is soluble in water, and slightly soluble in alcohol, and 100 proof vodka is 50%. There is the benefit that the alcohol will likely kill off any bacterial contaminants that might be present in the mushrooms. I would use a good amount of vodka.
I would then blend it a little more, and pour it out into another container (one which seals tightly) just large enough to handle the volume of liquid.
I'd let that sit for a while... maybe even a day or two, and give it a good shake every now and then.
I would then strain the mush through a wire coffee filter or fine sieve. Then I'd take the liquid and put it in a pan. I would carefully heat it to about 71 degrees Celsius, and keep it there for about 30-60 seconds. Then I would drop the heat a lot, so it was just enough to speed the evaporation of the alcohol.
Heating it to 71 degrees should be enough to kill off any pathogens that the ethanol missed. It is possible (probable, actually) that you would lose some amount of active compound in this process... I'm not sure how stable psilocybin is in ethanol... and the more heat exposure, the worse it is for the actives.... but it would probably do a lot for your peace of mind.
Whatever you do... if you decide to take this stuff, you need to be very clear and confident in your decision. The last thing you need is to start tripping, and then worry that you've poisoned yourself. That is a recipe for a horrible trip.
The ABSOLUTE worst that is likely to happen to you is nausea, or a minor gastro-intestinal disturbance for a few days, assuming you're relatively healthy.
I'm not in the medical field... but you could say that I'm qualified to speak authoritatively about foodborne illness. If you're that worried, toss them and wait for next time. If you did want to take them, I would personally stay on the safe side, and use a method similar to what I described.
Good luck.

Well, I can say that all the marks are bluish or dark blue... not black.
If there are black marks or mold, can't I just cut it off?
I should note that I'm only eating half the pack and a friend is eating the other half.

Also, would it be best to take it out of the damp, though airtight, container? I'm not expecting a huge trip on 15g of wet Mexican mushrooms, am I going to have full open-eye visuals?

I would think it's better to take it out of the container than not, I would think it's probably just moist from the mushrooms in there and can't be good. I wouldn't expect much in the way of visuals on 15g, probably some increased clarity (eg, better edge detection), more vibrant colors, and maybe some wavyness.
Cidney's advice on the method of prep seemed pretty good. W/e you do, you should definitely do something if your not going to eat them soon, dry them out or follow what he(she?) suggested. They're only going to get worse the longer you wait while they're fresh.

If those have been sitting unrefrigerated in an airtight container for all this time, I cannot imagine that they have not rotted.

If they are mostly blue, don't worry about it. They turn blue when they are bruised. If they smell like mushrooms and nothing else, they should be ok.
Eat them.
