New find for me -ID- please
    #7976931 - 02/04/08 09:03 AM (15 years, 11 months ago)

These guys were spotted thanks to my cat 'hemps'

The phriendly neighborhood kitty

This would be a somewhat rare find for me becuase I have not found anything with a purple spore print except cubensis
And I'm having a tough time finding these on mushroomexpert and my field guide isn't much help ..

maybe the pro's can help..CC, Alan ?anybody..

Btw I don't mean to post the full sized image but maybe it'll be easier then using image shack tho I'm pretty much using the same thing ..

6-8 muchrooms per cluster

Notice the purple grass blade ..Hmmm

Not the best quality but you can see the wavyness of the caps

My desktop ^

^ found under this tree..the very same tree I found a nice sized reishi growing from ..I think the tree is a cherry oak

Habitat: growing from the ground/grass/soil/tree root/wood

Gills: fresh- gill color varies from slighty yellow almost light light green- when dried its now brownish/light purple

Stem: yellow-kinda tough/thicker at the cap as it goes down it gets narrow

Cap: yellow/golden

Spore print color:a light purpleish

Bruising: when dried the yellow slightly got oranger..lol

Location: picked in southeastern US

I'm trying my best ...

p.s. I'ts raining hardcore now maybe these babies will pop back up in the next day or two so I can get better shots

Yeah those massive pics are seriously annoying. You know you can upload them to your gallery and then link them right?

... well i won't wait for them all to load, but purple print you say? Hyphalomas have a purple print. Without seeing half of the pics and going on the description alone i'd say Hyphaloma somethingorother. H.fasciculare is the common one around here.

Edit: The waviness is probably more to do with the caespitose huddling of the clumps, not the upturn of the cap.

Hypholoma you say .. thanks:thumbup:  I'm doing bits of research and I'm gaining knowledge on said mushroom but still have yet to find a photo or perfect discription of my find ..
This is rare for me ...once the sun comes out I'll go have a look around in the park ..Maybe I'll get lucky

I just want spring to hurry and roll around ...

It looks to be an inactive species of Psilocybe. Something similar to Psilocybe inquilina judging by the grassy habitat. Hypholoma are most often found on wood.

He said it might have been some wood they were growing from.  I've definitely seen them in mulchy areas etc.  I'd vote for sulfur tufts or related Hypholoma, but then again Workman knows about 10,000 times more about mushrooms than I ever will.

Can't be Stropharia coronilla ...Those have white stems and a ring is present ..Mine have neither of those charestics

It would be nice if these were an inactive psilocybe ..That would be a first for me..

Also I looked a bit closer at the ground and dug some of the earth up and there is deffinitly some mulchy woods underneath but its not solid its more like flakes of decomposing wood matter

If you look can see it in this pic

Oh I found a pic of Hypholoma fasciculare and mine look very close except there was not a large presence of wood and I don't live in Cali.

Actually, yours do seem to have a ring on the stem. Alun could be correct. Anyway, Stropharia, Psilocybe, and Hypholoma are all very closely related genera. In fact, I think that they were all Stropharia at some point.

That's not a complete veil, as with S. coronilla. It's not that species.
There is a partial veil, and faint veil remnants.

I'm putting my money of Pholiota or Hypholoma.

Good point, sulfur tufts are horrendously bitter. Although some relatives like the brick-cap don't taste too bad.

i have not quite figured it out yet xmush.

Evets has only posting in this forum for 2 days now.
Yesterday turned a topic into a flame and got it locked.
Along with a verbal warning from me.
Today he got another topic locked for being the way he is.
:scratches beard:
If it happens again tommorrow, we probably will not see him around again for a while i ponder.

Hypholoma fasciculare do indeed grow in the southeastern United States.
My guess is that is almost positively what you found.
A synonym of that is H. subviride.
Sulphur Tuft.
Poisonous.

They usually grow in clusters, but not always.

And the ones that I have tested the flavor for in Florida were never really bitter at all from what I can remember.
-Possibly the more bitter the more poisonous.

I envy all of you.  The ground is frozen and nights average below 20F, while days between 30-50 :frown:

Nothing till spring.  Hey you should take more high quality photographs (for my entertainment) of the spore print and stuff.  I'm bored.  This is interesting. :O
