if you are both you may want to consider moving abroad to teach ESL. There are many countries that need native english speakers to work for them. it is often very good money as well.
I am from canada and made about $18-$25 an hour on average renovating houses and sometimes doing new houses...BUT! the cost of living is so fucking high, and taxes hurt big time!
i am living i asia, making about the same per hour pay but taxes in this country are way lower. the cost of living is CHEAP. i pay $200 cdn a month for a 4 story house! without getting into it, at the end of all this BS i save about $1000-$2000 a month depending how much i *want* to work. not saying its easy, i work 16 hour days often, and many weekends but its not hard work (if you are patient with kids...).
i have planned it so that with current house prices in canada (which are fucking high and i don't see it lasting too much longer) i will have saved enough money (i have some saved from before) to buy my own house outright and i am not even 30 years old yet. no mortgage.
pick your country carefully. many countries are fairly dirty and have a bit of a safety concern...i would personally avoid places like india and china, but top each their own. here i have medical on par with canada, much better than usa. gas is cheaper, insurance is cheaper....basically it is just way hotter and a little dirtier than home. plus i eat like a king for mcdonalds prices lol (i am getting fatter).
but to top it all off, whats better than any of that? i guess if your a guy anyway.....this has got to be the virgin capital of the world and people here LOVE white people....i mean they really really love. i came here and now i am married....not sure what happened there????
the downside, not pot or shrooms....shit
if you are flexible, and are interested in experience and being able to SAVE (more important than what you make is what you save) a lot of cash....
think on it

i pm'd you. It really depends on what country you wish to teach in. i know people are doing it in south america, europe, asia, south pacific etc. i only know abut the country i am in, Taiwan.
things you need to teach here are a university degree and papers to show is. the rest is just travelling documents like passports, medical stuff visa etc etc.
a short tesl course will no doubt help! where i am from tehy were 1 or 2 months.
it also helps to know someone there so you can figure out living arrangements etc. but many schools here will also help you out. or there are agencies that you need to pay to setup everything
you don't need to know the native language here as there is english everywhere...but not everything is easy if you don't. in the city there is more english.
the plus is the money you SAVE not how much per hour you make. i make the same here as in canada....in canada i could save around $2 an hour, here its more like $15 an hour.....it was a no brainer for me...but you need to be patient, flexible and have an open mind!

Do you have any links to sites that have more info about all of this? How did you find out about the job you have now? Thanks for the PM.

i moved here and looked . it all depends on what country you go to. if you type in teaching in taiwan for example you will get lots, i assume otehr developed countries will have the same. the govenment websites will also have all the visa typ einfo you need. i think most governmen have english versions.

I have a friend, goes by the name of jomama on the boards here but hasn't been active for some time. She was in Korea for the past few years doing exactly what you're talking about. Now she's back in the states, doing the same thing in Korea town Los Angeles. So yes, it does work. Personally, I don't think I have what it takes for that type of work.
My patience with children can run pretty thin.

well you CAN. i have found cubes here in the wild. and there is pot, ex coke all the rest. in Taiwan you will get put in jail for a long time, deported if your lucky. other countries are VERY harsh. anyone remember the 3 canadians that were sentenced to death for possesion? i do....thats why i dont risk it myself....
its not that there is not these things here, the penalties are just harsher than they are in my home canada....perhaps on par with america here in taiwan.

I heard there are some countries you can go to that don't require a degree, only an ESL certification, or whatever it is. Was looking into getting one awhile back. Do you know if this would be a good idea or would I get stuck in an awful country and possibly scammed?

I'm seriously considering teaching english in an asian country soon. I graduate this december, and I think it would be a great experience to teach abroad. I've looked into a few programs, mostly in Taiwan and Japan.
Any other countries you shroomerites have heard good things about?

I've heard good things about S. Korea as well. Taiwan or S. Korea appear to be the most lucrative when you take into account living expenses. I've done alot of reading about Taiwan and it seems like an amazing country to live in.
I was seriously considering doing this sometime very soon, but I decided to hold off for a little while at least.

Here's my dilema:
I've been set on teaching in Japan for a very long time. I even went out and bought books/CDs on how to learn the language. They have a program that would be perfect for what I want to do: (Coordinator for International Relations (CIR) CIRs are engaged in activities of an international nature under the guidance of the division management of offices in local governments (prefectures, cities, towns or villages) or related organizations. CIR duties may vary greatly in emphasis and content from one contracting organization to another. )
However, I would need a solid handle on the language. I have the materials I need - now I just need to get my ass in gear.
I suppose if I'm not on the track to being proficient in a few months, then I can hold up and focus on Taiwan or S.Korea - where proficient language use is not a requirement.
Ive just been so set on Japan for so long, I can't give up on it yet.

Yeah man if you've got your heart set on Japan then fucking do it! Japan is a really expensive country by Asian standards, but I've always thought it would be an amazing place to live.
Foreign languages are definitely not my area of expertise, so I don't really have any advice for you about that. If I were you though, I'd download that Rosetta Stone program to get you started learning.
This should get you going:
