I have always used pint ball jars. I came across a case of pint non- tapered jars. They are straight glass, not the decorated molded (difficult to see through ball jars). I am so happy being able to see my LC without obstruction. They have plastic lids too. and i use taped tyvek squares for gas exchange and RTV injection/extraction points. I know this is not a new discovery, but dam . Details, research and learning from everyone here works wonders.

Wide mouthed all the way, especially with BRF, but it's also helpful with rye, IMHO.

everyone acts like the only thing you can use is widemouthed but unless you are using the PF tek it doesnt really make a difference IMO. i use tapered quart jars for nearly everything. you can pick these up for cheap at almost any grocery store

You are correct, wide mouthed is a must for BRF, but not needed for rye, but a wider mouth is easier to work with in any circumstance IMHO.

If you have "the" large PC (941) you will notice that you can't fit the advertised 19 quart jars inside if you wide mouth jars. You have to use the standard mouth jars to get it to full capacity. Also in one of Stamets books he recommends using standard mouth jars over wide mouth because it is a smaller opening for contaminants to fall into when doing G2G and the like.
