Fruiting a wild oyster log?
    #7974811 - 02/03/08 07:24 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

I have a 2 ft. or so oyster log that I brought home last spring from a hunt. It was totally covered with oysters at that point, and I expected another fruiting in the fall but it didn't happen. A while ago I noticed some pins on it, but then our weather got all cold again and they got scared. I want to bring it into the garage where it's a little bit warmer, and hopefully fruit, clone, and get some plug spawn going on. I'm wondering what sort of attention it would need to talk it into fruiting. Sweet words, soft music...? Most likely warmer temps would be a good start. I was thinking about placing it in a bucket of moist sand and keeping an eye on it... any of you oystermeisters have any advice?

hehe, I've often thought about this alot. This season I think I'm going to make a collection of logs oyster's/enoki and see if I can bring them back up to my enviorment and see what happens. I had boughten a shiitake log that I tried fruiting indoors and took it outside with no luck.

Since it's adapted to your regular climate, I'd leave it outside and it will fruit in the spring. Many species of wild oysters only fruit in the spring and summer and rarely fruit again in the fall.

If you really want to fruit it, try dunking in a bucket and placing in a storage shed or your garage. Spring fruiting oysters prefer temperatures in the 40's and 50's. If you warm it up much more than that, expect a major trichoderma bloom.

Thanks RR. That's about the temp of my garage. I have seen some oysters fruit here in the fall, but mostly in the spring. The spot that I collected this log from only seems to fruit in the spring, from what I've seen. Around morel time. I guess I was mostly basing my fall expectations on the fruiting patterns of oysters I observed the last place I lived, a thousand miles away. Duh...
