Hello Everyone. This is my first time posting here on shroomery. Looking for some Constructive Criticism and Advice on my "friends" second grow. Also, this is his first time using liquid culture. Heres how he started.
1 spore syringe of B+ 2 Karo Syringes of Treasure Coast Mycelium
His Spawn Substrate Consists of: 4 Parts Wild Bird Seed 1 Part Brown Rice Flour 2 Parts Vermiculite 1/2 part Quinoa Seed
My friend basically Follows Docs Wild Bird Seed Tek Without using Tyvek, and he Leaves the sunflower seeds in the substrate. All of the moisture for his substrate is acquired from the Steeping of the Grain. He shoots for a few notches drier than field capacity.
He uses his oven as a flow hood, and after PCing all his jars and letting sit for 2 days , He nocc'd and labeled them all accordingly. He also Created 4 new Karo jars with the Syringe of the B Spores, for future Liquid inoculation of grain.
He Puts his jars into a 2 tub Incubator with Aquarium Heater. He keeps his internal chamber temperatures around 84-88 degrees Fahrenheit. He also Covers the jars with a freshly Laundered blanket to retain heat.
The Jars Were inoculated on 1/26/08. After 8 Days, the single jar of B has taken over the jar with extreme speed. Here is a picture.

The Liquid Culture, However is taking much longer to colonize the grain substrate. Here is a picture of the best looking jar of the TC Strain.

Also, I would like to note that My Friend has removed 2 jars from his Incubation Chamber Because of a "tequila" smell. they seemed to be localized from the two removed jars. There was no signs of Contamination (other than the smell) and there WAS signs of growth on each of the jars. He threw them out to be safe and the smell has deminished considerably. When He Let the chamber go for a few days without opening there was a hint of "earthen / grain" that had a "Pleasant" Aroma. 8 More Jars were inoculated with the Treasure Coast Liquid Culture and Added the the Chamber on February 1st.
2 of the 4 Karo Jars are showing Small signs of growth. when Shaken/swirled there are a few visible signs of whispy white "clumps" approx the size of grains of salt. To make the karo jars, he used 300 ML of Distilled Water with 2 tablespoons of Light Corn Syrup, PC'd for 20 minutes. The jars were made with a single hole in the top, sealed on both sides with Silicone. They are also being kept in the Incubator. He will provide better pictures of them when he can actually get visible mycelium growth to show on his camera. If you look closely in the picture, the white "specks" are actually the floating mycelium.

Let me know what you guys think so far, and as time goes by I will be posting more pictures and updates!! Fire away with any questions!~

What do you guys think about Using Liquid Culture to Colonize the grain jars? He will be casing these jars when they are fully colonized. Also, How long does it usually take the liquid culture to fully colonize the jars? It seems like it is taking longer than the Jar started from spores. The problem is they are two different strains, so he is guessing the B+ happens to like his substrate better than the Treasure Coast strain does. Does Anyone have any suggestions on better substrate's than the current one he's using for these species? Thanks

i don't know about your thread but my B+ seem to come out of a stall when i change temp and turn them over.....so going from 84 down to 74F and turning them up side down has gotten them to move quite nicely....I'm at 10 days and I'm about 85% on 6 out of 7...the 7th has very little injected into it...

Get them out of those type of temperatures. Those temps are too high in my opinion. That tequila type smell is most likely "fermentation". That means you have bacteria present and it's doing its thing with the substrate. Bring them to around 75F (hopefully its not too late). You stand a good chance that if 2 jars were taken by bacteria, the others may follow soon.

Thanks for the input , shroomy. He dropped his chamber temp to 78-75f to see if that helps the Treasure Coast Strain out any. the smell from the incubator has gone away before any temp drop, but he will crank it down abit.. His average temp had been about 81F in the chamber.
