Next grow. Need some input.
    #7974274 - 02/03/08 05:37 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

Hey all.
My plans for my next grow are as follows.
2 189L rubbermaid totes hooked up to a cool mist humidifier to house casings. Im leaping up to using WBS and a pressure cooker and i am really excited. What i need input on is mostly lighting. I want to have the totes closed and put under my desk (yes i have enough space/will prevent my parents bitching about the mess i would make in our sunroom lol). I don't have much experience with lighting, but i am VERY hands on. I was thinking christmas lights housed inside tupperwares with vent holes to prevent overheating of the lights. I am very open to all suggesting, both simple and complex. Please i need some help, and all of the suggestions will be GREATLY appreciated.

Also, for casings, do you think that a cool mist will provide enough RH? Either that, or i was thinking a Ultrasonic with condensation chambers so that it can run 24/7 without soaking everything. Im not sure if the ultrasonic (even with a lot of the RH removed via chambers )will provide enough FAE.

cheers,

bzl

I don't think christmas lights would provide enough lighting. Also, I would't put lights inside the FC, but on the outside. Personally I use a 12 inch flourescent on a timer.

christmas lights would provide more than enough lighting actually. And they don't emit enough heat to change the temperature in the FC because of the constant FAE (they are very low wattage). Is your 12 inch fluorescent hooked up to a wall outlet? Because i have the mentality that that i would need to custom wire it to a 12v wall plug-in. Do you mind telling me more about your lighting setup? I was thinking of windowing the lids of the 2 tubs and housing the 12" above with a housing so that the light isn't very visible from the outside.

You need 6500 Kelvin color temp bulbs, CFL.

would all CFL's be 6500K? when i look on websites to buy CFL's they only say wattage. so I'm kinda stumped.

no they are not, you can get them in different spectrums.

I have seen energy savings bulbs that produce a very cold light, and a warm light. Which is obvoiusly different colour temps.

first of all, i never said my parent weren't cool with it. so don't make assumptions and flame people. I said they get angry about the mess. reading is always the best thing to do before quoting someone.

Here's some lighting info for you to base an opinion on. I have had identical results with natural lighting, incandescent, fluorescent & high pressure. Each I have had contams & poor pin sets, but most important have had great pin sets and great flushes with all different specrums of light and amount of lumens. Amazing enough you will find nearly no light at all, will still promote fruits.

To each his own.

Yeah, it's a 12" flourescent from target plugged into a timer I bought at walgreens on sale for $2.99. Plugged into a normal 110 VAC outlet. Don't know why you would need to rewire anything....The lights ballast controls the current for you.

Don't put electrical equipment in an environment with high RH. Don't expect to run humidifiers without proper timing mechanisms, 24/7 is certainly out of the question.

Also I am not quite sure what "mess" you are referring to here? Once you have your substrate and spawn layered in your bin it is self contained, aside from external humidifiers and other apparatus that is generally not required except for more advanced setups. If you've never pulled a monotub you might as well start from the beginning instead of looking into automation, you would be better served.

I've done 3 monotubs already... and have produced almost a pound through multiple flushes on each one. I am actually scrapping this idea and doing more tubs. Simple, Easy, High Yields.

I'm not an electrician, obviously I don't know what a ballast is, heh. But it works just like any other device you would plug into a standard american AC outlet.

Cool, I didn't mean to knock your plan or anything. When the time is right you can step up to a greenhouse with a coolmist and timer and all will be well, until then we rock the tubs! :gethigh:

yea no offense taken lol. i happen to think that monotubs shit on greenhouses. i can rig up a nice constant run of monotubs that would could easily provide a pound a day with proper scheduling without all of the electricity and jargon used to run a greenhouse.
