I believe overlay is when your casing layer becomes part of the substrate. If i'm thinking correctly, a casing layer which is nutritious can cause it.

Overlay is caused when mycelium mats up and then dies creating a hard surface that won't pin and won't let others pin form underneath. What causes it...you'll have to wait for a more experience opinion.

you see this alot when you let your casing become overgrown. when mycelium starts to poke through. patch , mist , and put in your FC.
