Finnish patient gets new jaw from own stem cells

I've heard of people getting ear transplants from tissues grown on their backs, but this is the first I've heard of a bone grown from stem cells being grafted onto someone's body.
Science is so crazy. I imagine this will be commonplace in 25 years? With organs being grown whenever someone has one that goes bad...
Quote:
Suuronen and her colleagues -- the project was run jointly with the Helsinki University Central Hospital -- isolated stem cells from the patient's fat and grew them for two weeks in a specially formulated nutritious soup that included the patient's own blood serum.
In this case they identified and pulled out cells called mesenchymal stem cells -- immature cells than can give rise to bone, muscle or blood vessels.
When they had enough cells to work with, they attached them to a scaffold made out of a calcium phosphate biomaterial and then put it inside the patient's abdomen to grow for nine months. The cells turned into a variety of tissues and even produced blood vessels, the researchers said.
The block was later transplanted into the patient's head and connected to the skull bone using screws and microsurgery to connect arteries and veins to the vessels of the neck.
The patient's upper jaw had previously been removed due to a benign tumor and he was unable to eat or speak without the use of a removable prosthesis.
Suuronen said her team had submitted a report on the procedure to a medical journal to be reviewed.

Clone water? What does that mean?

so it sounds like the stem cells were just used to grow over a prefabricated jaw piece?
not quite as sexy as it sounds at first, but still neato. I wonder if they had to do anything to encourage the major blood vessels to grow in particular spots? It would seem that leaving that to chance might produce undesirable results... but then I guess bone doesn't need much blood, and your body grows its own vessels fine during development/ healing

What they did was use the stem cells to grow an entirely new jaw. But for all the new organs they're growing, they need to give the cells a "scaffold" so to speak to grow onto.
So they make a little wire mesh or plastic mold in the general shape of the organ, and let the cells go to work.
But make no mistake, its a completely new and functional organ grown just from stem cells.
Its really quite impressive..

my point was we can make people live longer lives with this tech. but it's just going to lead to use all dieing sooner

I have no idea what that means.

He's talking about overpopulation and resources. We're already having problems at the current death rate, it would be nuts if we managed to extend lifespans once again by an extra 10-20 years on average.
However, this is a moot point, since the general population would never have access to this kind of technology, most likely limited by money. Although, what IS debatable, is that our rate of standardizing technology is most likely faster than our methods for making clean water available to the growing population.

There is no problem getting water, people just don't want to pay for it.
In places where there is a limited supply of fresh water, most notably San Diego and Israel desalinization is used en masse to provide drinking water for the entire populations of those areas.
As the technology becomes more widespread, it will become cheaper to the point of being competitive with traditional water sources.
There are a lot of bogeymen out there, but I wouldn't worry too much about us running out of water. I'm a geologist, trust me. There is plenty of water out there...
