Other medicinal cacti
    #7972402 - 02/03/08 10:56 AM (15 years, 4 months ago)

I'm looking for some other cacti, besides the commonly grown Peyote and Pedro... are there any other psychoactive cacti, or medicinal cacti I could grow?

--------------------
I'm in need of a sterile sporeprint, if anyone wants to do a trade for some seeds or something, or maybe just for free if you have a lot of them............. i'd really appreciate it :mushroom2:

Ariocarpus fissuratus
Coryphantha compacta (C. palmeri)
Echinocereus salm-dyckianus (E. scheeri?)
Echinocereus polyacanthus (replacing E. triglochidiatus which appears to be out of Tarahumara range – E. polyacanthus grows throughout Tarahumara territory and was once called E. triglochidiatus - currently recognized T. triglochidiatus is known from Colorado through New Mexico and into the more northerly sections of Mexico)

Echinocactus platyacanthus (E. visnaga)
Lophophora williamsii

Plants that are rumored to be considered “peyote” or "false peyote" but which lack support as having any traditional used among aboriginal tribes:

Ariocarpus agavoides
Ariocarpus kotschoubeyanus
Ariocarpus retusus ssp. Trigonus
Ariocarpus scapharostrus
Astrophytum asterias

I want to grow them all!!! I also want to find out if they are truly psychoactive...or if it's just a myth.

That would be a hell of a mythbusters- "In this weeks episode Adam and Jamine consume large amounts of Mammillaria and Ariocarpus cacti!"

If anyone would be willing to take up the quest of finding out if these suspected psychoactive cacti really have entheogenic effects it would be much appreciated.

I need help with this...

I can't do it alone!

I think it's worth sacrificing a few to solve this mystery.

I plan on growing many, many more from seed to replace it.

I'd to grow the most promising species-

"Peyotes"

Ariocarpus agavoides
Ariocarpus fissuratus
Ariocarpus kotschoubeyanus
Astrophytum asterias
Aztekium ritterii
Coryphantha compacta
Coryphantha macromeris
Epithalantha micromeris
Lophophora williamsii
Mammillaria sonorensis (M. craigii)
Mammillaria grahamii
Mammillaria (Mamillopsis) senilis
Mammillaria longimamma (Dolichothele longimamma)
Mammillaria pectinifera (Solista pectinata)
Obregonia denegrii
Pelecyphora aselliformis
Strombocactus disciformis
Turbinicarpus pseudomacrochele
Turbinicarpus pseudopectinatus (Pelecyphora pseudopectinata)

Psychoactive or Medicinal Cacti-

Carnegiea gigantea
Echinocereus salm-dyckianus
Echinocereus polyacanthus
Echinocactus platyacanthus
Matucana madisoniorum
Neoraimondia macrostibas
Pachycereus pecten-aboriginum
Pachycereus pringlei
Trichocereus species

Yes, that's not a good one to start with...

Try a Coryphantha or Mammillaria cactus...

ok, so other than Trichocereus sp. and Lophophora sp. what order of other suspected active cacti would you list to start with? I'm sure the OP would appreciate it too.

I would like to mention pachycereus weberi syn.stenocereus weberi, from information I have found at various sites around the net this cactus appears to contain many alkaloids and believe it is also active ,I'm still looking to find a list of total alkaloids from this cacti but do know that sab has some of them listed and there are a few of the anhalonium type alkaloids which are also found in l. williamsii.
I know this cactus contains many many alkaloids not as many as williamsii but believe this cactus contains more than most other cacti if not all, other than williamsii.

Hul Gil, look into it and get back to us...

Good Canadaties for Psychoactive Cacti-

Ariocarpus agavoides; fissuratus; kotschoubeyanus
Coryphantha compacta
Echinocereus salm-dyckianus; polyacanthus
Epithalantha micromeris
Mammillaria sonorensis (M. craigii); grahamii; senilis
Mammillaria longimamma(Dolichothele longimamma)

I'd also look into the following-

Pelecyphora aselliformis
Strombocactus disciformis
Turbinicarpus pseudomacrochele
Turbinicarpus pseudopectinatus (Pelecyphora pseudopectinata)

I can tell you from personal experience Aricarpus has medicinal properties..

A few months ago i received some dried ariocarpus. After a long day of walking around, doing stuff (as you do), I came home and decided to test this stuff out;

So I put a little ariocarpus triangle in my pipe and smoked it. Within a minute my exhaustion had disappeared, my headache had disappeared, i was slightly stimulated, yet not overly so, just enough to feel, well awake agian, and also my whole body was relaxed, including my guts...
So I could definitely call it an anti anxiety agent as well...

Merkin, What species Ariocarpus was it? Have you had any other experiences with the substance since then?
