Creaks and pops from joints while exercising... necessarily harmful?
    #7972391 - 02/03/08 10:52 AM (15 years, 11 months ago)

Whenever I do a pushup (well most of the time) there is a soft pop that comes from my left elbow. It's not really a sharp 'pop' -- not on the magnitude of knuckles cracking or anything -- but more like one of those incidental noises you hear when you stretch or something.

It is not painful at all, but it is kind of unnerving hearing it every pushup. Do those of you with a lot of resistance training experience think it is safe to ignore?

I don't have much resistance training experience, but that happens to me when I do push-ups. It also happens to my knees when I'm doing squats, especially Hindu squats. I don't think it is healthy.

My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

My knees crack and pop every time I go up some stairs, it's quite disconcerting.

My left shoulder pops when doing pushups. It doesn't hurt, just feels uncomfortable.

i pop all the time. If i am to stand flat on the floor barefoot, and then rise up onto my tippie toes, there are easily over 15 individual pops. Yes, its grosse

Sounds like a symptom of chronic tension in that area. Try to balance your daily use of each arm and consciously relax your shoulders. Although you feel it in your elbow I'll wager that the root cause is either in your shoulders or your back. Avoid pushups prior to stretching and spending time relaxing beforehand. Happy exercising-

Everyone gets stuff like that, but I tend to find it "pops" or creaks less when you get that area warmed up and some blood flowing into it.
