I am exploring the use of energy exercises to increase my overall available energy. I have been reading about Qi Gong (Chi Kung), and it agrees with my belief systems so I have thought about giving it a 3 month trial spin starting today. Anyone got any experience with this?
Quote:
Trees are totally exposed to the elements and draw their power from everything around them. They reach deep into the soil with their roots. They reach upward toward the light. Their fibrous trunks are filled with the flow of life. They take strength from the earth, from water and rain, from the sun, from the air, and from the space that surrounds them. This is what we have in mind when we say "stand like a tree". You are a field of energy. You are nourished by everything around you, like a tree standing in the midst of all the elements.

A warrior is not a leaf at the mercy of the wind. No one can push him; no one can make him do things against himself or against his better judgment. A warrior is tuned to survive, and he survives in the best of all possible fashions." ― Carlos Castaneda

Sounds like a religious dogmatic scam.
-------------------- “Strengthened by contemplation and study, I will not fear my passions like a coward. My body I will give to pleasures, to diversions that I’ve dreamed of, to the most daring erotic desires, to the lustful impulses of my blood, without any fear at all, for whenever I will— and I will have the will, strengthened as I’ll be with contemplation and study— at the crucial moments I’ll recover my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

Qi Gong is the movement exercises from which Tai Chi arose. There is much scientific evidence that Tai Chi and Qi Gong actually promote health in various ways. I don't see how it could be a scam since it doesn't cost anything to practice it. It is also not associated with religion in any direct way, so I don't see how your comments are supposed to be relevant. My decision to give it a limited try are an attempt to evaluate the effectiveness of the technique for myself. In any case I have never heard of meditation and stillness as being damaging in any way.

I've done a handful of sessions of standing wei dan with pretty immediate effects. It is recommended that in the beginning the student sensitize him/herself to the flow of chi, which I fortunately had background in from a book on astral projection. The presence of chi was definitely enhanced and I usually ended with a serene state of mind and a grounded feeling. It seemed to make me more aware of chi in my surrounding environment afterward also - in a "flow of life" way, not like "hey I can feel the chi from that blade of grass!"
I would like to make a habit of it to sort of balance out my yoga, but so far I just havn't...I'm hoping to start once it gets nice out and I can get out amongst the trees - the chi's supposed to be really happening with those fellas, esp. conifers, according to the Chinese.

Yeah trees are cool. I have a huge stand of very large white pines in my side yard. Yesterday I took the guy in the books advice and did my practice there.. I felt that it is as useful as meditation practice in many of the same ways. Lately I had slacked on my meditation, and I am wanting to get back into it with more variety.

I just got done practicing some qigong and feel great!:) I found this video that gives a wonderful introductory routine. The 'detailed instructions' section does a lot better job of explaining the exercises. At first I thought I was going to fast, but then I saw I was going the same speed as him. I think the first group just goes slow because people aren't used to using their mind and body together in such a different way. I think I'm picking up on it quickly because I used to yoga. Anyone remotely interested needs to give it a try. Do it outside though. I did mine inside. I don't think qi likes TVs and computers. At least bookmark the page for latter use. And yes like with yoga, a teacher is best. Qigong
