Can anyone identify these? They looked really good but obviously didn't want to risk eating poisonous mushrooms. Still, I'd like to know.

or a morel/truffle hybrid
read the Mushroom Hunting Forum Rules and you will see that we require a full description of any mushrooms when asking for a ID Request. that includes describing the spore print color. so do the best you can with providing all of that information, or your topic will be locked.

Speaking as a someone who really doesn't know a thing about mushrooms and has just recently started to explore this site and the fungal map around me, I can throw my bit in for a full proper ID request. It seems like a pain and you really want to just throw a photo up and see if people can give you the thumbs up so you can chomp em and fry for the afternoon. But when you take the time to make a proper request you will learn much more about the mushrooms than a a simple "yes active" or "no". You might find yourself heading out just to look at what has popped up that looks interesting or new and before you know it you have a new hobby and greater understanding of the world around you. And that greater understanding is what makes the actives so interesting in the first place, eh?

I was just curious whether they were active or not. I took that picture on December 30th in Berkeley while I was on vacation, I'm now back home in New York. As far as actives, I have no problem acquiring them from friends, and am always thankful for the greater understanding of the world around me that they offer.
I'm not very experienced when it comes to mycology and am not sure how to properly describe them. Again, this was posted merely out of curiosity.

This thread has been closed.
Reason: Hi. If you would like to know only if they are active, but not what they are, please ask exactly that. That can usually be answered easily. Identification is more difficult, and requires more information a lot of the time.
Those mushrooms are Armillaria as alan said. They are not psychoactive.
