Alan Rockefeller said: I have considered writing a web browsing client that saves all new posts on the shroomery to a mysql database, so in the event that something happened I would have all the data and could put it back up.
It would be a pain to authenticate all the users again though.
I'd happily put a raw copy of the database on BitTorrent or something except for that exact problem. How do you protect everybody's passwords, e-mail addresses, PMs, IPs, mod and admin forums, etc? We could just exclude the sensitive data but that makes it a lot less useful to reconstruct the site. Or we could encrypt the whole thing with a key held only by the admins for emergencies, but I don't think many people would bother to download 3.4GB of data that they couldn't do anything with. There doesn't seem to be a good solution, plus I really don't think the site is in any danger, which is why I never went forward with this.

Only thing that could realistically derail the Shroomery is political oppression. Peak oil (among other things) will cause that to happen within the forseeable future IMO. It will be a gradual process and is nothing to be alarmed about right now.
Whatever comes.. I've been here for TEN freakin' years and I'm gonna enjoy the site as long as possible!!
When it comes to the Shroomery, you ain't seen nothin' yet babee!!

Perhaps you could rsync it every night via cron job to a server at a different ISP, that would be good enough. Maybe it could be integrated into the regular backup process - as long as you are going to back up the data, it might as well be a remote backup.
I have an a semi-underground website and one of our protections is to have mirrors all over the world. We have more than a dozen mirrors on five continents, they would all have to be raided at once to take it down. Since there is no global internet police that just is not possible, so no one would be likely to try. There is also a secret mirror that holds the content but doesn't run a web server, just in case anyone gets any ideas.

-------------------- 'Pain is meant to wake us up. People try to hide their pain. But they're wrong. Pain is something to carry, like a radio. You feel your strength in the experience of pain. It's all in how you carry it. That's what matters. Pain is a feeling. Your feelings are a part of you. Your own reality. If you feel ashamed of them, and hide them, you're letting society destroy your reality. You should stand up for your right to feel your pain and leave the Shroomery.' ~ Jim Morrison

That's a good idea I'll mention it to the other admins.
