I have some grow bags that colonized great with just spores but they are not fruiting too well.it's been a few weeks and i have had a handfull of mushrooms grow out from the sides of the bag,and some right off the plastic!,but there has been NO pinning from the middle of the substrate at all.Any idea what is going on?

what kind of substrate is in the spawn bags? grain spawn bags dont fruit too good invitro and should be spawned to a bulk substrate for go results. Otherwise you will most likely get a few grams of shrooms from a spawn bag if your lucky.

sounds crazy. Is it a spawn bag with a filter patch or what? Spawn bags dont breathe very much air for fruiting. "Gas transmition 1 in h20" is written on the pre-sealable model and "gas transmition 15 in h20" is written on the non pre-sealable ones on the sample from the manufacturer i was sent. I dont know what that means exactly but i know that filter patch bags dont breathe alot for fruiting they are designed for spawn production and also designed for final fruiting when removed from the bag as a big cake when 100% colonized to fruit in another environment for particular edibles as grown on big mushroom farms. Thats what Lou Hsu says and he would know.

They were advertised to fruit right in the bag.I just knocked up one more of them with a little substrate from the previous bags,do you think i should just try casing it?

I guess you could advertise anything, technically the advertising was true you grew a few mushrooms in the bag. However, spawn bags arent designed to fruit like that and you get poor flushes most of the time like i said they are made for the growing of spawn and then to be used to spawn bigger trays or what have you or for the bag to be cut open and fruited in a humid environment for your particular variety of edible mushroom.
I recomend cutting the bag off, spraying it with h202 water mixture (1:20) heavily and then placing it in a rubbermade fruiting chamber of some sort apropratly sized with perlite in the bottom and fan it daily.

dunno maybe they had used a great isolate and/or just got lucky.
When I have a spawn bag go past 100% colonization and I fail (due to laziness) to cut it open and spawn it to pastuerized poo and leave it arround they usually take a while and eventualy put out a few measily grams at best of weakling little stemmed shroomies. They are just straight wbs though. You probably get a little better results with the more complete mix of your bags but still the air that goes through the patch is real limiting. You could at the very very least cut a few + signs with an exacto around 1" above substrate and stuff it with polyfill and then you have a miniature sandbag which is what i do but bigger.

Pour water in the bags until the sub floats and leave for 24 hours. Drain water and reseal (I use tape). They dry out during colonization and you've got to rehydrate to give the pins something to drink!
