I always enjoyed sysadmin more than programming. Once everything is dialed in, it runs pretty smoothly resulting in little stress. However, you have to be ready for the occasional meltdown that results in stress overdrive. I gladly accept the occasional hyper-stress of sysadmin to the constant stress associated with programming. Just don't let yourself get roped into helpdesk duty...

I originally wanted to be a unix sysadmin. I saw being a programmer as a path to it as most sysadmin jobs require programming experience. But that job seems even more stressful than mine now that I work in the field. And if I where go transfer to an admin position, Id have to go back to the beganing and work with a bunch of kids that don't even know how to do a simple crontab update.

I dont know, I just got promoted to a position where I will be doing more design and analysis that coding. Ill see how that works. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

All IT jobs are stressful to a certain extent I think. Programming being one of the more "cushy" ones IMO.

Phone support is a bitch, and can be stressful, as well as being a field technician. Not to mention having to work "after hours" (12am-6am) sometimes to do maintenance.

Because of these things, i quit my day job and work for myself, doing freelance design and coding. not having a boss and constant "do this this this this and this" is a relief. I get more sleep, too.

in short, stick w/ programming ;]

btw, what language?
